A drywall repair is only invisible if the texture matches. Most Twin Cities houses have something on the walls or ceilings: orange peel sprayed from a hopper, knockdown that was sprayed and then flattened with a knife, skip trowel or a sand finish done by hand, or a swirl on an older ceiling. A smooth patch in the middle of any of those shows through three coats of paint.
Matching is a matter of reading what is there and reproducing it: the size of the splatter, how wet the mud was, how long it sat before it was knocked down, and how far it was flattened. We test on a piece of cardboard against the wall until it matches, then apply it over the patch and feather it out past the edges so there is no line where new meets old. After it dries it gets primed, and the wall is ready for paint.
Sometimes a patch is in the worst spot, on a wall the light rakes across, or the old texture is one that cannot be feathered. Then the answer is to retexture the whole wall from corner to corner, so there is nothing to compare it to. We tell you which it will be from the photos.

Situations and options
Orange peel
Fine splatter sprayed from a hopper gun, the most common wall texture in newer houses. Matched by adjusting the mud thickness and the air pressure until the test panel splatter is the same size, then sprayed over the patch and feathered out.
Knockdown
A heavier splatter left to set for a few minutes, then flattened with a wide knife. The look depends on the timing and the pressure of the knife. Matched on a test panel first, then applied and knocked down to the same depth as the wall.
Skip trowel and hand textures
Mud applied by hand with a trowel in skips, arcs or a sand finish. Slower and more variable, which makes a small patch easier to hide in it but a large one harder. Sometimes the whole wall gets redone.
Whole-wall retexture
When a patch cannot be blended, or the wall has several old patches that show, the entire wall is retextured from corner to corner. There is nothing to compare it to, so it always matches.

Can you match knockdown texture on a patch?
Yes. Knockdown is about the splatter size and how long it sets before it is flattened. We test on cardboard until the pattern and the depth match the wall, then spray the patch, let it set the same amount of time, and knock it down with the same knife. Feathering the edge past the patch is what hides the transition.
Why does my patch still show after it was painted?
Either the texture was not matched, or the patch was finished smooth on a textured wall, or it was painted without primer and the new mud drank the paint differently than the old wall. Sometimes it is also the light: a patch on a wall that a window rakes across shows every difference. The fix is to retexture over the patch to match, prime, and paint corner to corner.
How do you match orange peel texture?
With a hopper gun and a test panel. Orange peel is a fine splatter, and the size of the droplets depends on how thin the mud is and how much air is behind it. We adjust both until the cardboard matches the wall, then spray the patch and feather it out past the edges. Primer after it dries, and the wall is ready for paint.
Can you texture a whole wall so an old patch disappears?
Yes, and it is the sure way. We skim over the old patches so they are flat, then retexture the entire wall corner to corner. With nothing beside it to compare to, the texture matches itself. It costs more than a patch blend but on a wall with several bad patches or a texture that is hard to feather, it is the better result.
Does the texture need to dry before painting?
Yes, and then it needs primer. New texture is raw joint compound, and it absorbs paint differently than the painted wall around it. We prime the textured area, or the whole wall, after it dries. Paint the next day. Painting is quoted as its own line, or leave it primed and paint it yourself.
Can you remove the texture and make the wall smooth instead?
Yes. A textured wall can be skim coated with two or three thin coats of compound over the whole surface, sanded flat and primed. It is more work than matching, but if you would rather have smooth walls than textured ones, a repair is a good time to do the wall, and it is done room by room.
