Pella's big-box lines, the 150 Series and 250 Series vinyl windows at Lowe's, are what most homeowners bring us. Some bring the Lifestyle wood line or Impervia fiberglass from a Pella showroom. Either way, the ask is the same: the windows are paid for and sitting in the garage, and the homeowner wants a carpenter, not a program. We are an independent installer. We do not sell Pella, we are not a Pella dealer, and we follow the instruction sheet in the carton like any other installer would.
Vinyl windows have their own habits. The frame is welded vinyl, so it moves with temperature more than wood does; we leave the gap the sheet calls for, shim only at the points it shows, and never crank a screw tight enough to bow the frame. The 250 Series also comes in two builds. The new-construction version has a fin that gets nailed to the sheathing after the siding is cut back. The replacement version has a flat, finless frame that gets screwed through the jamb into the old framing and sealed from outside. Lowe's stocks both and the tag is the only thing that tells them apart.
Send a photo of each window from inside and outside, a tape across the old frame, and a photo of the Lowe's order or the sticker on the glass. We confirm size, build and jamb depth before the order ships or before we schedule.

- Interior jamb extensions and casing, or a drywall return, to close up the inside
- Rot repair at the sill or framing when we find it, quoted from the photos first
- Photos of every finished window in your job folder
- Painting the new interior trim as its own line on the quote, or leave it primed and paint it yourself

- Finless replacement unit into the existing opening vs. a nailing-fin unit with siding work
- Size and style: sliders and double-hungs go faster than a wide picture unit or a mulled set
- First floor vs. second floor and whether a ladder crew or staging is needed
- Siding: vinyl and lap siding vs. stucco or brick around the opening
- Interior finish: jamb extensions and casing vs. a drywall return
- Rot at the sill or jack studs behind the old window
- Number of windows in the same trip
Send the Lowe's order printout or a photo of the sticker on each window, plus inside and outside photos of each opening with a tape across the old frame.
How long it takes
Finless replacement units: three to five in a day. Nailing-fin units with the siding opened up: one to three in a day depending on size and siding.

Situations and options
Pella 250 Series replacement (finless)
The flat-frame vinyl unit that goes into the existing opening once the old window is out. Screwed through the jamb into the framing, shimmed where the sheet shows, foamed, and sealed on the outside with backer rod and sealant. No siding comes off.
Pella 250 or 150 Series new construction (fin)
Siding cut back, old frame out to the studs, sill pan and flashing tape in, fin nailed and taped over, exterior trimmed and sealed. This is the right build when the old frame is rotted or you are re-siding anyway.
Pella Lifestyle wood and Impervia fiberglass
Heavier showroom units that usually arrive by truck from a Pella dealer. Same flashing and setting; on the wood units we keep the bare interior dry and finish the extension jambs and casing to match, with paint or stain as a separate line.
Whole-house Pella swaps
Ten or twenty windows at once. We work room by room so the house is never open in more than one place, and the per-window price drops as the count goes up.

Who installs Pella windows from Lowe's?
JMB Builders installs Pella windows bought at Lowe's as a labor-only job across the Twin Cities metro. We are an independent installer and a licensed Minnesota contractor, not a Pella dealer and not part of the store's install program. You buy the windows, we check them against your openings, remove the old ones, flash and set the new ones, and trim them. Priced per window, quoted from photos within one business day.
Is the Pella 250 Series a replacement window or new construction?
Both are sold. The replacement version has a flat frame with no fin and goes into the existing opening once the old window is out; it is the usual pick when the siding stays put. The new-construction version has a nailing fin and needs the siding cut back so the fin can be nailed and taped. The tag on the window and the Lowe's order line say which one you have. If you are not sure, send a photo of the tag and we tell you.
How do you install a Pella vinyl window that has no nailing fin?
The old window comes out and the opening is cleaned to bare framing. We set a sill pan or a sloped pan of flashing tape, drop the unit in, square it with shims at the points the instruction sheet marks, and screw through the jamb into the framing with the frame held straight. The gap outside gets backer rod and sealant, sometimes a new brickmould or trim board, and the inside gets foam and trim. It is a solid install when it is done that way; it fails when someone skips the pan and relies on caulk.
Do I have to use the Lowe's installer for Pella windows?
No. The store's install program is optional, and plenty of homeowners take the windows home and hire their own carpenter. We cannot speak to Lowe's or Pella's paperwork, so read what came with the order. What we do is install the window to the printed instructions, put the photos in your job folder, and stand behind our own workmanship as a licensed Minnesota contractor.
What should I measure before ordering Pella 250 Series windows?
For a finless replacement unit, measure the width and height of the opening the old window sits in at three points each and use the smallest numbers. For a fin unit, measure the rough opening behind the trim. Also measure the wall depth from the drywall face to the outside of the sheathing so the interior can be finished with the right extension jambs. Send those numbers with photos and we check them against the Lowe's order before you commit.
Can you install Pella windows the store delivered but the store's installer would not?
Usually, yes. The common reasons an installer program declines a job are rot at the opening, stucco or brick, a second-story window with no ladder access, or an opening that is not a standard size. Those are ordinary work for us. Send photos of the opening and the windows, tell us what the other crew said, and we quote it within one business day.
