Masonite exterior door installation, labor only, across the Twin Cities metro: you buy the Masonite fiberglass or steel prehung at Home Depot, Lowe's or a lumberyard and JMB Builders installs it. We are an independent installer, not a Masonite dealer. The old door and frame come out, a sill pan goes down, the new unit is set plumb, flashed, foamed and trimmed inside and out. Priced per door, quoted from photos.
- Priced per door, labor only
- Fiberglass and steel prehung units
- Independent installer, not a Masonite dealer

Masonite makes a large share of the exterior doors on the shelf at Home Depot and Lowe's in the Twin Cities: fiberglass collections like VistaGrande, Belleville, Barrington and Heritage, and HD and Sta-Tru steel doors. Most come as a prehung unit, the slab already hung in a frame with the sill, weatherstrip and corner pads in place. We install it as a labor-only job. We are an independent installer, not a Masonite dealer. Our Masonite interior door page covers the hallway and bedroom doors; this one is the door to the outside.
Masonite sells its fiberglass doors as a Performance Door System: the square-edge slab, frame, cap sill, weatherstrip and corner pads are made to work together. That only pays off if the unit goes in right. The old door and frame come out, the rough opening is checked for rot and square, a sloped sill pan goes down, and the new unit is set on it with the hinge jamb plumb and shims behind every hinge and the strike. Flashing tape laps over the nailing flange or brickmould, low-expansion foam fills the gap, and the brickmould and interior casing are finished.
Before you buy, send a photo of the door from inside and out and the width of the wall at the jamb. The prehung has to match your swing and your jamb width, and those two mistakes are the ones that send a door back to the store.

What you supply
- The Masonite prehung exterior door in the right width, height, swing and jamb width
- The lockset and deadbolt or handleset, unless the door came with hardware
- Sidelites or a transom if they are part of the unit you bought
- Paint or stain color if the door came primed and you want it finished
What JMB supplies
- A check of the door size, swing and jamb width against your opening before you buy
- Removal and haul-away of the old door, frame and trim
- Sill pan, flashing tape, low-expansion foam, sealant, shims and screws
- Rot repair at the sill framing or subfloor, quoted once the old frame is out
- Exterior brickmould sealed to the siding and interior casing to match the house
- Lockset, deadbolt and strikes installed and the sill and weatherstrip adjusted
- Painting or staining the door and trim as its own line on the quote
- Photos of the finished door in your job folder
How it is priced: per door
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:
- A single door vs. a unit with one or two sidelites
- Same-size swap vs. an opening that has to be reframed to fit the new unit
- Rot at the sill, jamb feet or subfloor once the old frame is out
- Siding type around the door: vinyl, lap, stucco or brick
- Jamb extensions when the wall is thicker than the door frame
- Painting or staining a primed or stain-grade door, quoted as its own line
Send photos of the old door from both sides, a close-up of the sill, and the Masonite product name or the store listing for the door you bought.
How long it takes
One Masonite prehung in a sound, same-size opening: most of a day. A unit with sidelites or a rotted sill: a day to a day and a half. Painting or staining comes after.

Situations and options
Fiberglass Masonite doors
VistaGrande, Belleville, Barrington and Heritage, in a smooth skin for paint or a woodgrain skin for stain. Many come primed, not finished. We hang the door, then the finish is its own line, or you paint or stain it yourself.
Steel Masonite doors
HD and Sta-Tru steel doors are the value end of the aisle. Steel dents and conducts cold at the edges, so the weatherstrip, sill and corner pads have to be adjusted tight. We set and seal them the same way as fiberglass.
Masonite doors with sidelites
A door and one or two sidelites in one frame is heavy and wide. It needs a header and rough opening sized for the whole unit, and more hands to set. We check the opening against the unit size before you buy.
Slab only into your old frame
Some homeowners buy just the Masonite slab to hang in a sound existing frame. It can work, but the hinge mortises, bore and weatherstrip have to be fitted to the old jamb, and the slab loses the matched system. A prehung is usually the better buy.
Masonite Exterior Door Installation — Fiberglass and Steel, Labor Only: questions, answered
Who installs Masonite entry doors?
JMB Builders installs Masonite fiberglass and steel entry doors homeowners bought at Home Depot, Lowe's or a lumberyard, labor only, across the Twin Cities metro. We are an independent licensed Minnesota contractor, not a Masonite dealer. The old door and frame come out, the new prehung is set on a sill pan, flashed, foamed and trimmed, and the hardware is adjusted. Priced per door, quoted from photos, with a reply within one business day.
Can you install a Masonite fiberglass door I bought at Home Depot?
Yes. Buy the prehung, have it delivered or bring it home, and store it upright in the garage in its packing. Before you buy, send photos of the old door and the wall thickness at the jamb so we can confirm the size, swing and jamb width. Those are the three things that most often make a door the wrong one.
What jamb width do I need for a Masonite exterior door?
It matches the wall: measure from the inside face of the drywall to the outside face of the sheathing at the jamb. Many houses take a standard width, but older homes and thicker walls often need a wider jamb or jamb extensions added on site. Send a photo with a tape across the jamb edge and we tell you which to order.
Does a Masonite exterior door come with the lockset?
Usually not. Most Masonite prehung units come bored for a lockset and deadbolt but without hardware, so you buy it separately in the finish you want. Check the store listing. If you are using a handleset or smart lock, buy it before install day so we set the strikes once.
Should I paint my Masonite fiberglass door before it is installed?
No. Paint or stain it after it is hung, so the finish is not scratched during the install and the edges match once the door is adjusted. Many Masonite doors come primed, and primer is not a finish. We quote painting or staining as its own line, or you can do it yourself once the door is in.
Is this the same as your Masonite interior door installation?
No. Interior Masonite doors are lighter, hang in a dry wall and are mostly about even reveals and casing. An exterior Masonite door is a weather barrier: it sits on a sill pan, is flashed to the wall and sealed to the siding, and the threshold and weatherstrip are adjusted so it does not leak or draft. The interior door page covers whole-house swaps.
