Feather River is the fiberglass entry door line at Home Depot, and what sets it apart in the aisle is the glass: decorative inserts, privacy patterns, matching sidelites and transoms. Homeowners order it at the millwork desk or online, Home Depot delivers it to the driveway, and the install is up to them. That is where we come in, as an independent installer. We are not a Feather River dealer and we do not sell the door; anything about the product comes from Feather River or Home Depot. The install is our work.
Decorative glass changes the job in two ways. The door is heavier on the glass side, so the hinge jamb has to be plumb and the hinges screwed long into the stud or the slab drifts and the latch misses. And the glass is the part most likely to be damaged in shipping, so we inspect the unit before the old door comes out, not after. A sidelite unit arrives as one wide mulled frame that goes in as a piece, which means the rough opening has to be checked before the order ships, because a special-order door with your glass in it does not go back on the truck.
Feather River doors come prefinished in some colors and stains and unfinished in others. If yours is unfinished, it needs stain or paint before it faces a Minnesota summer; we quote that as its own line, or you finish it after we hang it.

Situations and options
Single Feather River door with decorative glass
The most common order: a prehung fiberglass door with a glass insert in a standard width. Set on a pan, hinge jamb plumbed first, long screws into the stud, foam, seal, lock hardware, casing. The old brickmould usually gets replaced with the one on the unit.
Door with one or two sidelites
A mulled unit that arrives as one frame. It is heavy and needs the rough opening confirmed before the order is placed. We bring two people, set the whole assembly plumb, and trim the outside with new boards since the old single-door trim will not fit.
Prefinished vs. unfinished doors
Feather River sells some doors prefinished and others unfinished or primed. Prefinished doors are done when they are hung. Unfinished doors get stain or paint as a separate line, or you do it after we hang it. Either way the door is installed first.
Swapping an old steel or wood entry door
The typical replacement: a dented steel door or a rotted wood door out and the Feather River in. We check the framing behind the old threshold, repair what we find, and set the new unit in the same opening.

If it is unfinished, we quote staining or painting as its own line, or you finish it yourself after we install it.
Can you install a Feather River door with decorative glass and sidelites?
Yes. Sidelite units come as one mulled frame with the door and the sidelites already joined, and sometimes a transom that sits on top. It is heavy, wide and has to go in as one piece, so we check the rough opening before the order is placed and bring two people on install day. The glass is set plumb with the door so the pattern lines up across the unit.
What if my Feather River door arrives with cracked glass or a damaged jamb?
We inspect the unit before the old door comes out, so a damaged door never leaves you with an open wall. Cracked glass, a chipped skin or a split jamb leg go back to Home Depot; take photos at delivery and refuse or note the damage on the delivery paperwork if you can. We reschedule when the replacement arrives. A small cosmetic mark on the hinge edge or the jamb that will be covered by trim is not worth sending back, and we tell you which is which.
Do I need to be home when Home Depot delivers the Feather River door?
It helps. Delivery usually drops the unit in the driveway or garage on a pallet, and someone should look it over for damage and get it out of the weather. Store it upright against a wall, out of the sun, with the wrap on. If you cannot be there, tell us the delivery date and we can plan the install soon after so the door does not sit outside.
What lockset works with a Feather River door?
Any standard lockset and deadbolt in the common bore size fits; the door comes bored for a knob or lever and a separate deadbolt. Buy them in the finish that matches the glass caming and the hinges, and have them on site install day so we can set the strike plates once.
