LVP gaps separating in winter are fixed by finding why the floor moved, then tapping the planks closed with a floor gap tool or relaying the run. A damaged plank in the middle of the floor is cut out and a new one set in without taking up the room. Floating vinyl plank moves with temperature. In a Minnesota winter, a floor by a cold patio door or over an unheated space shrinks a little; in summer sun it grows. A floor laid tight and free to move handles that. A floor that was pinned, under kitchen cabinets, an island, a heavy piano or trim nailed through the planks, cannot move as one piece, so the joints pull apart at the ends or push up into a peak. Rigid-core laminate reacts to dry winter air as well.
So the first step is the cause. We look for anything pinning the floor, check the expansion gap at the walls and transitions, and check flatness, because planks over a dip wear their locks loose. Then the gaps get tapped closed from the middle of the room with a gap-closing tool, working toward the wall, without taking the baseboard off. Joints that keep opening are glued at the ends or the run is relaid.
A single damaged plank in the middle of the floor does not mean taking up the room. The plank is cut out in place, the locking edges are trimmed on a new plank, and it is set in with adhesive so it sits flush with its neighbors. It works best with a spare plank from the same box lot.

End gaps closed with a gap-closing tool, working from the middle out to the wall, with the baseboard left on. The cause is fixed first so they stay closed.
One plank replaced mid-floor
The damaged plank is cut out in place, a new plank is trimmed to drop in, and it is glued so it sits flush. No need to unclick the floor from the wall.
Relay a run or a room
When the floor is pinned, too tight at the walls or over a dip, the run is taken up, the problem fixed and the planks relaid with new ones where needed.

Why is my LVP separating in winter?
Vinyl plank shrinks a little in the cold, and a floor that cannot move as one piece pulls apart at the end joints. It is usually pinned somewhere: under cabinets, an island, heavy furniture or trim nailed through it. A dip under the planks or a cold spot by a patio door makes it worse. Find the pinning first, then close the gaps.
How do you fix gaps in vinyl plank without removing baseboards?
With a floor gap tool. It grips the plank with a rubber pad, and a few taps slide the plank back into its neighbor, working from the middle of the room out to the wall. The baseboard stays on. If the gaps keep coming back, the floor is pinned or out of flat, and that is fixed too.
Can you replace one damaged vinyl plank in the middle of the floor?
Yes. The damaged plank is cut out in place, the locking lip is trimmed off a new plank, and the new plank is set into the space with adhesive so it is flush with the rest. The floor does not have to be unclicked from the wall. A spare from the same box lot matches best.
What causes LVP to peak at the joints?
The floor has no room to expand. It is tight against a wall, a door jamb, a cabinet or pipe, or pinned by trim or a heavy item, and when it grows in warm weather the joints push up. The fix is to cut the expansion gap back where it is missing and free whatever is pinning it.
What if I do not have any spare planks?
We try to find the same product at the store. If it is discontinued, a plank can be borrowed from inside a closet or under an appliance and replaced there with a close match. We tell you which from the photos.
Does humidity affect LVP gaps?
Vinyl plank moves more with temperature than humidity. Laminate and some rigid-core products react to dry winter air as well. Keeping the house at an even temperature and not letting the room by the patio door get very cold helps. Most repeat gaps come back to a pinned floor.
