To replace carpet with LVP, JMB Builders cuts the carpet into strips and rolls it out with the pad, pulls the tack strip and every staple, fills and flattens the subfloor, then installs the vinyl plank with new transitions at each doorway and the base and shoe reset. Carpet to LVP is the most common flooring job in a Twin Cities house right now: bedrooms, a family room, or a whole main floor that has had the same carpet since the house was built. The plank install is the same as any LVP job. What makes this one different is the demo, and the demo is where the sloppy jobs show.
Carpet comes up in strips and goes out the door with the pad. Then the tack strip comes off the perimeter, and the staples that held the pad, hundreds of them, get pulled or driven flush, because a single staple left proud shows through the plank. The subfloor gets checked for squeaks and screwed down, and the low spots that the carpet pad was hiding get filled. Then the planks go in.
The carpet was thicker than the plank, so the baseboard was set high to sit on it. We either add shoe mould to close the gap or drop the baseboard, depending on what looks right and what you want to spend. Doors that were cut for carpet usually clear the new floor with room to spare.

- Transitions to the rooms and stairs that stay carpeted or tiled

Send a photo of each carpeted room, a close-up of the carpet edge at a doorway, and the plank you picked. Pull back a corner of carpet if you can and photograph what is under it.
How long it takes
Two bedrooms: one day, carpet out and planks in. A whole main floor: two to three days, with the carpet out of each room the same day its planks go in so you are never walking on bare subfloor overnight.

Situations and options
Bedrooms only
The common first step. Carpet out of the bedrooms and closets, planks in, transitions at the hall if the hall stays carpeted. Doors and base handled in the same visit.
Whole main floor
Living room, dining, hall and bedrooms in one continuous floor with no transitions between rooms. Planks run in one direction through the whole space, laid out from the longest sightline.
Basement family room
Carpet on a slab often hides damp. The carpet comes out, the slab is tested for moisture and flattened, and a below-grade rated plank floats over a vapor barrier.
Stairs stay carpet, floors go plank

What is under my carpet, and does it matter?
In most Twin Cities houses it is plywood or OSB subfloor on the main and upper floors and a concrete slab in the basement. Older houses sometimes have an original hardwood floor under the carpet, which changes the conversation entirely. Pull back a corner in a closet and send a photo. The subfloor decides the prep, and the prep is most of the labor.
Do you haul away the old carpet?
Yes. Carpet, pad, tack strip and staples all leave with us. We cut the carpet into rolls that fit in the truck and it goes to the transfer station. If your city offers a bulky pickup you would rather use, we can stack it at the curb instead.
Can you do just the bedrooms and leave the carpet in the hall?
Yes. A transition strip at each bedroom door holds the carpet edge tight and covers the end of the planks. It is a very common way to do this in stages: bedrooms this year, the hall and living room when the budget allows, matching planks from the same line.
Will the LVP be lower than the carpet was?
Usually, by a little. Carpet and pad together are thicker than a vinyl plank. The base was set to sit on the carpet, so there is a gap under it once the plank is in. Shoe mould covers that gap and is the quick fix; dropping the baseboard to the new floor is the cleaner one. Doors that cleared the carpet clear the planks.
Can the stairs stay carpeted?
Yes, and most people leave them. Carpeted stairs are quieter and give better footing. We finish the top step with a stair nose in the plank color and the bottom with a transition to the carpet. If you want the stairs redone in wood or plank, that is a separate job we also do.
How long does it take to replace carpet with LVP on a whole main floor?
Two to three days for a typical main floor, including trim. We work room by room: carpet out, subfloor prepped, planks in, then the next room. Furniture shifts from the room we are in to the one we just finished. You are not living on bare subfloor at any point.
