Laminate is a floating floor: a dense fiberboard core with a printed wood or stone face, clicked together and laid over a foam or felt underlayment. It is cheaper than hardwood, harder-wearing than most vinyl, and it goes down fast. It is also the floor that fails the loudest when the subfloor is not flat, because the joints work loose and the planks lift at the ends.
We flatten the subfloor first, roll out the underlayment the product calls for, with a vapor barrier over concrete, and lay the planks with the end joints staggered so the floor locks together as one sheet. The expansion gap at every wall, cabinet and pipe is what lets the floor move without buckling, and it gets covered by the base and shoe when we put them back.
Laminate can go over a flat existing floor, which saves the demo. Sheet vinyl, tile with the grout lines skimmed, and old hardwood that is tight all work as a base. Carpet does not. We tell you which from the photos.

- Cutting around a hearth, a kitchen island or a lot of pipes and vents

How long it takes
A bedroom: half a day. Three bedrooms and a hall: one to two days including trim. Add a day when the old floor has to come out first.

Situations and options
Over a wood subfloor
The standard install. Subfloor screwed and flattened, foam or felt underlayment, planks floated with the gap at the walls. The quiet install when the underlayment is the thicker felt type.
Over a basement slab
Vapor barrier under the underlayment, or a combined product, over a slab that passes a moisture test. Laminate is not waterproof, so a basement that gets damp should get LVP instead, and we will say so.
Over an existing hard floor
Sheet vinyl, tile or tight old hardwood can stay if it is flat. Grout lines get skimmed. The floor height at the doors goes up, so the doors may need a cut.
Water-resistant laminate in a kitchen
Newer laminates rated for water resistance can go in a kitchen or a powder room when the maker allows it, with the gaps at cabinets and the dishwasher sealed the way the instructions say.

Can laminate go over my existing floor?
Over a hard, flat floor, usually yes. Sheet vinyl, ceramic tile with the grout lines skimmed, and old hardwood that is tight all work. Carpet and pad never do; they come out. The two things we check are flatness, since laminate joints open up over dips, and the height at the doors and the stairs after the new floor is on top.
Is laminate okay in a kitchen or bathroom?
In a kitchen, a laminate rated water-resistant by its maker is fine, installed with the edges at the dishwasher and sink sealed as the instructions say. In a full bathroom with a tub or shower we recommend LVP or tile instead. Standard laminate swells when water sits in a joint, and a bathroom floor gets wet.
What underlayment does laminate need?
A thin foam or felt pad that lets the floor float, quiets it underfoot, and takes up tiny variations in the subfloor. Over concrete it also needs a vapor barrier, either a separate sheet or an underlayment with a film built in. Many laminates come with a pad attached; those do not get a second pad. We follow what the box says.
Do you install laminate I bought at Menards or Costco?
Yes. Bring it home a couple of days ahead so it acclimates, send us the box label with your photos, and we install it. Buy about ten percent more than the floor area for cuts, and buy the transitions and stair nose from the same line at the same time so they match.
Why does laminate need an expansion gap?
The core is wood fiber, and it grows and shrinks with humidity across the year. A floating floor needs room at every wall, cabinet and pipe to do that. Without the gap it pushes against the wall and buckles up in the middle of the room in summer. The base and shoe cover the gap, so you never see it.
Laminate or LVP for a basement?
LVP. Laminate is fine in a dry basement over a vapor barrier, but if the slab ever gets damp or a floor drain backs up, laminate swells and LVP does not. Laminate holds up a little better to scratches and feels firmer underfoot, so it is a good choice for upstairs bedrooms and offices. In a basement the water risk decides it.
