To remove a storm door properly, JMB Builders takes off the door, closer, rails and mounting frame, pulls every screw, fills the holes in the brickmould, and repairs or replaces brickmould that is split or rotted, so the entry looks like it never had one. Then we check the entry door's weatherstrip and sweep. Across the Twin Cities metro. Priced per door, quoted from photos, with a reply within one business day.
- Priced per door, haul-away included
- Screw holes filled, brickmould repaired
- Entry door seals checked after

A storm door is screwed to the face of the brickmould with dozens of screws, plus the closer bracket on the jamb and sometimes a drip cap screwed above. Take it off and the brickmould is left with rows of holes, paint lines where the frame sat, and sometimes rot that was hidden behind the rails. Leave it like that and water gets into the holes.
So removal is three steps. The door, rails, expander and closer bracket come off and go in our trailer. Every hole is filled: exterior filler or epoxy in wood brickmould, a PVC patch in PVC trim. Where the brickmould is split, soft or full of holes, that section is spliced or the piece replaced. Painting the trim is quoted as its own line, or leave it filled and primed and paint it yourself.
Is removing it the right call? It often is when the storm door is broken, when it traps heat against a dark entry door in full sun, or when a new insulated entry door does not need it. It is worth keeping on an old wood door or a door facing driving weather with no overhang. We tell you what we see from the photos.

How it is priced: per door
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:
- Filling holes in sound brickmould vs. splicing or replacing rotted sections
- Wood brickmould vs. PVC, which is patched differently
- A storm door glued or caulked hard to the trim
- Entry door weatherstrip or sweep that needs replacing once it is exposed
- Several storm doors in one visit
- Painting the brickmould, quoted as its own line
Send a straight-on photo of the entry with the storm door closed, one with it open, and close-ups of the bottom of the brickmould on both sides.
How long it takes
Removal and hole filling on sound brickmould: an hour or two. With brickmould repair or replacement: about half a day.

Situations and options
Remove and patch
The storm door off, every screw hole filled, the brickmould sanded and primed. For trim that is sound under the storm door frame. Ready for paint the same day.
Remove and replace brickmould
When the trim is split, soft at the bottom, or has more holes than wood, the brickmould on that side, or all around, is replaced in wood or PVC. It is the cleanest finish.
Remove and put on a new storm door
If you want a storm door, just not this one, we take the old one off, fix the trim and hang the new one. That job has its own page.
Remove for a new entry door
A new insulated entry door may not need a storm door, and some door makers caution about heat build-up behind a storm door. Check the entry door maker's guidance; we take the storm door off either way.
Remove Storm Door — Taken Off, Holes Filled, Brickmould Repaired: questions, answered
Should I remove my storm door?
It makes sense when the storm door is broken or sagging, when it traps heat against a dark entry door in full sun, or when you have a new insulated entry door you want to show off. It is worth keeping on an older wood entry door or a door that takes driving rain and snow with no overhang. Send photos and we tell you what we see.
How do you patch holes after storm door removal?
Every screw is pulled and each hole filled: exterior wood filler or epoxy in wood brickmould, a PVC patch in PVC trim. Then the trim is sanded and primed. When there are too many holes or the wood is soft, splicing in a new section or replacing the brickmould gives a cleaner result. Painting is quoted as its own line, or you paint it yourself.
Can I take off an old storm door myself?
Yes, it is mostly screws. Take the closer off first so the door does not swing free, then the door, then the rails. The harder part is the trim afterward: filling the holes so water stays out, and dealing with rot that was hidden behind the frame. That is the part most people call us for.
Will my front door be draftier without a storm door?
A little, on an older door. The storm door was blocking wind, and once it is gone the entry door's own weatherstrip, corner pads and sweep do all the work. We check those when the storm door comes off and replace any that are worn, so the door seals on its own.
What if the brickmould is rotted behind the storm door?
It is common, because water runs down behind the storm door frame and sits at the bottom. We cut out the soft section and splice in new wood or PVC, or replace the brickmould on that side. If the rot goes into the door jamb itself, that is a jamb repair and we quote it from what we find.
Do you haul away the old storm door?
Yes. The door, rails, closer and brackets go with us, and the area is cleaned up. If you want to keep the storm door for another opening or to sell, tell us and we take it off carefully and leave it in the garage.
