A storm door is a light aluminum door hung on a Z-bar or hinge rail screwed to the brickmould of the entry door. Everything that goes wrong with it comes back to three parts: the closer, the hinge rail and the latch. The closer is a small air cylinder that wears out, loses its seal or gets bent when the wind catches the door. The hinge rail loosens when its screws strip out of soft or rotted brickmould, and the door drops and drags. The latch misses when the door has dropped or the frame has twisted.
Retractable screens are the other common call. Larson and other makers put the screen on a spring roller inside a cassette at the top of the door. When the screen comes off its side tracks, the spring runs down or the bottom bar jams, the screen will not pull down or will not go back up. Most of those are fixed by re-seating the screen in the tracks or replacing the cassette ordered for that door model.
We check whether the door is worth fixing before we fix it. A door that is bent across the frame, has a torn-out hinge rail on rotted trim, or is old enough that nobody sells its parts is better replaced, and we tell you that from the photos. Situations and options
Closer replacement
The closer leaks, slams the door or will not hold it open. A new closer and wind chain go on, adjusted so the door closes firmly without banging the frame. A second closer at the top helps a heavy full-view door.
Sagging door and loose hinge rail
The door drags on the sill or the latch no longer lines up. The hinge rail gets re-fastened into solid wood, the door squared back up and the latch reset.
Stuck retractable screen
The screen will not pull down, jams halfway or will not retract. We re-seat it in the tracks, free the bottom bar and replace the cassette when the spring or screen is worn out.

Why won't my storm door close all the way?
Usually the closer. A worn closer loses air and stops short, and one set too tight holds the door open against the frame. The other cause is a door that has sagged on its hinge rail and now rubs the sill or the latch side. A new closer and a re-fastened hinge rail fix most storm doors that won't close.
Can you replace just the storm door closer?
Yes. Storm door closer replacement is one of the most common small jobs we do. The closer is matched to the door's weight and mounting, the brackets reused or replaced, and the speed set so the door closes and latches without slamming. We add a wind chain if the door does not have one.
Can you fix a Larson storm door retractable screen that is stuck?
Often, yes. Most stuck retractable screens have come out of the side tracks or have a jammed bottom bar, and they can be re-seated. When the spring has run down or the screen is torn, the cassette is replaced with the part made for that door model. A photo of the label on the door helps us find the right part.
Is it worth repairing an old storm door?
It is when the frame is straight and parts are still sold. Closers, latches, sweeps and screens are all replaceable. A door bent across its frame, or one whose hinge rail tore out of rotted trim, is usually better replaced, and we will say so from your photos before you pay for a repair.
Why does my storm door latch not catch anymore?
The door has dropped, or the strike has moved. When the hinge rail screws loosen, the latch side sinks below the strike. We re-fasten the hinge rail, square the door and move or replace the strike so it catches every time.
