A storm door is a light aluminum frame hung from a hinge rail screwed into the brickmould of the entry door. When the wind catches it open, the whole force goes into those screws and the closer. The usual result: the hinge rail pulls out of the wood, the closer bracket rips off, and the door frame bends at the top corner where it hit the house.
What happens next depends on the frame. If the door is still square and only the hinge rail and closer let go, the rail gets re-anchored into sound wood and the door is rehung with a new closer and a wind chain so it cannot swing past the stop again. If the frame or the expander is bent, it will never seal or latch right, and the door gets replaced.
Look at the brickmould too. Screws torn out of old or soft brickmould leave split wood that will not hold a new screw. That trim gets repaired or replaced before any storm door is hung on it.
You file the claim and deal with your insurer. We give you photos and a line-item list, meet your adjuster when you want us there, and do the work once it is approved. Minnesota law bars a contractor from waiving, rebating or paying your deductible, and we do not.

Rehang and re-anchor
The frame is still straight. The hinge rail is re-screwed into sound wood, a new closer and wind chain go on, and the door is adjusted to latch and seal.
Brickmould repair, then rehang
The screws tore out and split the brickmould. The damaged trim is replaced or repaired so the hinge rail has solid wood to hold, then the door goes back up.
New storm door
The frame or expander is bent, the glass broke, or the door is too old for parts. The old door comes out and a new one is fitted to the opening, sealed and adjusted.

Can a storm door that blew open in the wind be fixed?
If the frame is still square, usually yes. The hinge rail is re-anchored into solid wood, a new closer goes on, and a wind chain is added so it cannot swing past the stop again. If the frame is bent at the corner, it will not latch or seal and the door should be replaced.
What is a wind chain on a storm door?
A wind chain is a short chain with a spring, mounted beside the closer, that stops the door before it opens far enough for the wind to fling it into the house. Many storm doors come with one that never got installed. It is the simplest way to keep this from happening again.
Why did the screws pull out of my storm door hinge rail?
The hinge rail is screwed into the brickmould around the entry door, and when the wind catches the door, all the force lands on those screws. In older or soft brickmould they strip out. The fix is sound wood behind the rail and longer screws, which sometimes means new brickmould first.
Does homeowners insurance cover a storm door damaged by wind?
Wind damage is covered by many homeowners policies, subject to your deductible, but it depends on your policy. Compare the repair quote with your deductible before you file for a storm door alone. When other wind damage from the same storm is on the claim, list the storm door with it.
Can you install a storm door I buy myself?
Yes. Buy it wherever you like and we install it, or we supply it. Measure the entry door opening width and height between the brickmould, note which side the hinges should be on, and send photos first if you are not sure of the size.
Can a contractor pay my deductible on a wind damage claim?
No. Minnesota law bars a contractor from waiving, rebating or paying any part of your insurance deductible, and JMB Builders does not. The deductible is your share of the repair and is paid as part of the job.
