Trim Carpenter in Ramsey, MN

Your Ramsey house still has the narrow base and clamshell casing it was built with, and you want trim that makes the rooms look finished.

A trim carpenter in Ramsey, MN mostly upgrades the thin builder trim that came with the city's 1970s–2000s split-levels, ramblers and two-stories: taller baseboard, casing on windows that only had drywall returns, crown in the living areas, and full basement trim-outs. JMB Builders copes every inside corner and scribes base to the floor. Base is priced per linear foot and casing per opening, from photos or a free in-home estimate.

  • Base per linear foot, casing per opening
  • Drywall-return windows cased in wood
  • Old builder trim removed and hauled away

Ramsey grew in waves from the 1970s through the 2000s, and each wave got the trim that was cheapest that year. The older split-levels and ramblers often have narrow ranch or clamshell base and casing, sometimes stained oak, sometimes painted. Many of the 1990s and 2000s two-stories went the other way: windows wrapped in drywall with no casing at all, and a short base. Either way the fix is the same kind of job: new base, new casing and a consistent reveal on every door and window.

A split-level has more trim in it than it looks. The upper level, the lower level and the entry each have their own short walls and outside corners, and every one of those corners has to be mitered tight. We run the same profile and height through all of it so the levels read as one house. Windows with drywall returns get a jamb extension, a stool and apron if you want them, and casing.

Basement trim-outs are the other big share of the work: doors hung and cased, base around every room and the egress window finished. Our crew was working in Ramsey this past winter and we quote the town the same as anywhere we go. We paint as a separate line on the quote, or you take the trim primed and caulked and paint it.

How it is priced: per linear foot

Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:

  • How many feet of base and crown, and how many window and door openings
  • Windows with drywall returns that need jamb extensions before casing
  • The number of outside corners, which runs high in a split-level
  • Profile height and paint-grade vs. stain-grade material
  • Removing and hauling the old trim

Send a photo of each room, a close-up of a window and a door, and tell us how many of each are in the job.

How long it takes

Base and casing on one level: one to two days. A whole split-level or two-story: three to five days, set by footage and the number of windows.

Trim Carpenter in Ramsey, MN: questions, answered

Can you put casing on windows that only have drywall returns?

Yes. We add jamb extensions out to the face of the wall, then a stool and apron or casing on all four sides. The drywall return stays behind the new jamb. It is the most common trim change we make in 1990s and 2000s two-stories.

Is it worth replacing clamshell trim?

If you are repainting or putting in new floors, it is the right time. Clamshell base and casing is thin and rounded, and a taller base with a flatter casing changes how a room looks more than paint alone. We can do one level first and the rest later in the same profile.

How is trim priced in a split-level?

Base and crown are priced per linear foot and casing per opening, the same as any house. A split-level has more outside corners and short runs, which adds time. There are no prices on this site; photos of each level get a reply within one business day, or book a free in-home estimate.

Should new baseboard go in before or after new flooring?

After the flooring, so the base sits on the finished floor and covers the expansion gap. If you are keeping the floor, we scribe the new base to it. Carpet is the exception: base usually goes in first and the carpet is tucked under it.

Do I need a permit for new trim in Ramsey?

Replacing trim on existing walls is not usually permitted work. A basement finish as a whole often is, and that permit belongs to the basement project. We check with the City of Ramsey building department when a job goes beyond trim.
