A trim carpenter in Maple Grove, MN mostly upgrades the trim production builders put in every house on the street: thin base swapped for taller baseboard, drywall-return windows given real casing and a stool, crown added on the main floor. JMB Builders does it room by room or the whole house, coped corners and base scribed to the floor. Baseboard is priced per linear foot, casing per opening. Send photos and we reply within one business day.

  • Baseboard per linear foot, casing per opening
  • Drywall-return windows cased with stool and apron
  • Coped inside corners, base scribed to the floor
New bay window with white casing and seat board, centered in a quiet room

Maple Grove was built by production builders in big phases through the 1980s, 90s and 2000s, and they trimmed whole neighborhoods the same way. Short ranch or colonial base, narrow door casing, and in a lot of houses no window trim at all: the drywall wraps into the opening and stops at a vinyl or wood window with a thin sill. It was quick to build and it still looks it.

Most of our trim work in Maple Grove is an upgrade of that package. Taller baseboard with a cap or a modern flat profile, wider door casing, and drywall-return windows turned into cased windows with jamb extensions, a stool and an apron. Crown goes in the living room, the dining room or the whole main floor. When the windows themselves are being replaced, the trim-out is done in the same visit.

The finished basement is the other common call. Many were finished by an earlier owner with whatever base was on sale, and the doors and casing upstairs no longer match the lower level. We run one profile through both floors so the house reads as one job. We have been in Maple Grove three times this year, May through July, and we work just over the line in Plymouth and Champlin.

Three photos and a sentence is enough: a reply within one business day, or ask for a free in-home estimate. Or text the photos to 763-204-2099.

Photos (optional)

Up to 3: one wide shot of the area, one close-up of the opening or trim, one of anything you're unsure about.

How do you want your quote?

Free, no obligation. Every quote is written and itemized, so you can compare it line by line.

What you supply

  • Photos of each room from the doorway and a close-up of the current base and window returns
  • The look you want: a sample, a profile number from the lumberyard, or a photo you like
  • Which rooms are in and which stay as they are
  • Your paint color if we are painting; painting is quoted as a separate line, or leave it primed and caulked and paint it yourself.

What JMB supplies

  • Baseboard, shoe, casing, stool and apron in primed MDF, finger-jointed pine or stain-grade wood
  • Jamb extensions built out to the drywall on return windows before casing
  • Removal and haul-away of the old trim
  • Coped inside corners, glued outside miters, base scribed to the floor
  • Filled nail holes and caulked seams, ready for paint
  • Painting or staining when you want it, quoted as its own line
  • Photos of the finished rooms in your job folder

How it is priced: per linear foot

Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:

  • Linear feet of baseboard and the number of window and door openings
  • Drywall-return windows that need jamb extensions, a stool and an apron before casing
  • Profile height and detail; a built-up base with a cap takes more time than a single piece
  • Paint-grade MDF or pine vs. stain-grade wood
  • Crown on the main floor, priced by the foot and by the number of corners
  • Removing old trim, or keeping it and adding to it

Send one photo per room, a close-up of a window return and a count of windows and doors per floor. We measure the rest at the free in-home estimate if it is needed.

How long it takes

A main floor of new base and door casing: two to three days. Casing ten to fifteen drywall-return windows: about two days. Whole house with crown: a week or so.

Situations and options

Drywall returns to cased windows

Jamb extensions out to the face of the drywall, a stool and apron at the bottom, casing on three sides. The single biggest change in a production-built house.

Taller baseboard throughout

The builder base comes off and a taller profile goes on, scribed to the floor, with shoe where the floor is hard and uneven.

Crown on the main floor

Crown in the living and dining rooms, or the whole level, coped in the corners and run level even where the ceiling is not.

Basement matched to upstairs

Base, casing and door trim in the finished lower level run in the same profile as the main floor so the two match.

Trim Carpenter in Maple Grove, MN: questions, answered

What does a trim carpenter do in a Maple Grove house?

In most Maple Grove homes the job is replacing the builder trim: taller baseboard, wider casing, real trim on windows that were finished with drywall returns, and crown on the main floor. A trim carpenter also hangs and cases interior doors and trims out finished basements. JMB Builders does all of it, room by room or the whole house.

Can you add casing to windows that only have drywall around them?

Yes. We glue and nail jamb extensions to the window frame so they come flush with the drywall, then add a stool, an apron and casing on the sides and head. The drywall corner stays behind the extension, so there is no patching. It is the most common trim upgrade we do in Maple Grove.

Do I need a permit to replace trim in Maple Grove?

Replacing baseboard, casing and crown is finish work. If the job changes framing, such as widening a doorway, or adds wiring, most cities require a permit; we check with the City of Maple Grove building department and pull it when one is needed.

Should I replace all the trim at once or one room at a time?

Either works, but one profile for the whole house is the reason to do it. If you go room by room, pick the profile first and keep it, so the last room matches the first. Whole floors cost less per foot than single rooms because setup and cleanup are done once.

Is MDF trim good enough for a Maple Grove two-story?

For painted trim in bedrooms, living rooms and offices, primed MDF is smooth, straight and takes paint well. In a mudroom, a bathroom or a basement near a floor drain we use finger-jointed pine or PVC instead, because MDF swells if it soaks up water. Stain-grade trim has to be solid wood.

How do I get a trim quote in Maple Grove?

Send a photo of each room from the doorway, a close-up of the current base and a window, and a count of windows and doors; we reply within one business day. If you would rather walk the house with us, book a free in-home estimate. The quote is written and itemized by room.
