Custom built-ins in St. Cloud, MN are shelves, benches and cabinets built on site for one spot in the house: a bookcase wall, a window seat, a dining room buffet or mudroom lockers. JMB Builders builds plywood boxes to your measurements, scribes them to the walls, and finishes them with base and crown that match the house. Priced per project in paint-grade or stain-grade wood. Send photos and we reply within one business day.
- Priced per project, built on site
- Sketch with bays and heights first
- Base and crown matched to the room

A built-in is cabinetry made for one wall, so it starts with that wall: how wide, how tall, what is in it, and how far out of plumb it is. In the century-old houses near downtown St. Cloud and around the university, walls are often plaster and seldom flat, and there are alcoves, window bays and spaces beside a fireplace that were made for shelves. Built-ins there are usually stain-grade and sized to the trim already in the room.
In the mid-century and newer homes, built-ins solve storage: lockers and a bench at the back door, shelves around a TV, a desk wall in a spare bedroom. Those are usually paint-grade, with poplar face frames on plywood or MDF boxes, primed and caulked.
Every box is screwed to studs and scribed to the wall and floor, shelves get a hardwood nosing, and doors hang on concealed hinges. Electrical in a built-in is wired by a licensed electrician. Painting or staining is its own line on the quote, or you finish it yourself.

Custom Built-Ins in St. Cloud, MN: questions, answered
Can you build shelves into an alcove in an older St. Cloud house?
Yes. Alcoves in older houses are rarely square, so the boxes are built a little small and the face frame is scribed to the walls on site. That way the shelves look like they were built with the house, with no gaps along the plaster.
Can a built-in buffet go in a dining room with original trim?
Yes. The buffet's base lines up with the baseboard and the top is set at a height that works with the window stools or wainscoting. Stain-grade wood is chosen to match the existing trim, and the stain is tested beside it first.
Paint-grade or stain-grade built-ins: which should I choose?
Paint-grade is poplar with MDF or plywood, primed for paint; it costs less and suits newer homes with painted trim. Stain-grade is solid hardwood and hardwood plywood, and it suits houses where the original trim is stained. The choice usually follows the trim already in the room.
Do built-ins add electrical work?
Only if you want lights in the shelves, an outlet in a media cabinet or a charging spot. That part is wired by a licensed electrician. We cut the openings and leave room for the wiring when the boxes are built.
Can built-ins go around a window?
Yes. Shelves on both sides with a window seat underneath is a common layout, and it fits the deep window bays in many older homes. The window casing is tied into the face frame so the trim reads as one piece.
Do you build built-ins in Sauk Rapids and Sartell too?
Yes. Sauk Rapids and Sartell sit next to St. Cloud on the same Highway 10 trips from Zimmerman, so built-in work there is scheduled the same way, as back-to-back days. Send photos and we reply within one business day.
