Custom built-ins in Champlin, MN tend to land in three places in the city's 1980s–90s two-stories and splits: a storage seat in a bay or bow window, a buffet or hutch in the dining room, and a media wall in a newly finished basement. JMB Builders, a licensed Minnesota contractor based in Zimmerman, builds them on site and trims them to the room. Priced per project; send photos and we reply within one business day, or book an in-home estimate.

  • Priced per project
  • Window seats, buffets, media walls
  • Built on site and trimmed to the room

Bay and bow windows are common in Champlin's late-1970s to 90s homes, and most of them have a flat seat board that collects plants and mail. A built-in seat turns it into storage: a box under the seat with a hinged lid or drawers, a cushion on top, and trim that ties into the window's head board and returns. If those are stained or loose, we replace them at the same time.

Formal dining rooms are the second spot. A buffet or hutch built into one wall, with doored cabinets below, a top for serving and shelves or glass doors above, fits a dining room that also has wainscoting or a chair rail. The third is the basement. Many lower levels in Champlin are being finished now, and a media wall or a bookcase wall is easiest to build right after the drywall, before the base goes in.

Everything is built on site: plywood boxes screwed into studs, face frames, shelves with a hardwood nosing, base and crown carried into the built-in. We are in Champlin every month, and we build in Maple Grove and Anoka too.

Custom Built-Ins in Champlin, MN — Window Seats to Basement Walls: questions, answered

Can you build a storage seat in my Champlin bay window?

Yes. We build a box to the angles of the bay with a hinged lid or drawers, set a new seat board on it, and trim it into the window's returns and apron. If the head board or returns are water-stained, we replace them in the same job. A photo from inside with a tape across the bay is enough to start.

What goes in a built-in dining room buffet?

Usually doored cabinets for serving dishes, a couple of drawers for linens and silverware, a top at serving height and shelves or a glass-door hutch above. We size it to your wall and tie it into the chair rail or wainscoting if the room has it.

When should basement built-ins be built during a finish?

Right after the drywall is taped and primed, before the baseboard. That way the base dies into the cabinet ends and any outlets or cable can be planned behind it. Plan it with the electrician before the drywall goes up if you want lights inside.

Do built-ins need a permit in Champlin?

A built-in fastened to an existing wall is usually finish work. If it involves new wiring or changes framing, we check with the City of Champlin building department and pull a permit when it is required. New circuits are wired by a licensed electrician.

Paint-grade or stain-grade for a built-in buffet?

Paint-grade matches painted trim and costs less. Stain-grade uses hardwood plywood and solid wood so the grain shows, which suits a dining room with stained trim. Painting or staining is quoted as a separate line, or you can finish it yourself.

Do you build built-ins in Maple Grove and Anoka as well?

Yes. JMB Builders is a licensed Minnesota contractor based in Zimmerman, and we build in Champlin, Maple Grove, Anoka and across the Twin Cities metro. Send photos and we reply within one business day.
