Custom built-ins in Coon Rapids, MN mostly go into the city's 1960s–80s ramblers and split-levels: bookcases beside a fireplace, a media wall in a finished lower level, or a bench and hooks at a split-level entry. JMB Builders, a licensed Minnesota contractor based in Zimmerman, builds them on site and scribes them to walls and floors that have settled. Priced per project. Send photos and we reply within one business day, or book a free in-home estimate.

Most houses in Coon Rapids are ramblers or split-levels from the 1960s, 70s and 80s. Neither was built with much storage. A rambler's living room has one long wall that ends up holding the TV, the books and everything else. A split-level has a small entry landing with nowhere for shoes and coats, and a lower level that is half below grade and often being finished now. Those three spots are where most built-ins here go.

A house that age is not square anymore. Floors dip toward the center beam, and the walls lean a little where the framing has dried and moved. We build plywood boxes on a leveled base, screw them to the studs, and scribe the end panels and the top to the wall and ceiling so there is no tapered gap. In a lower level the base sits on the slab, so we raise it on a toe kick that keeps the cabinet bottoms off the concrete.

The trim on a built-in should match the room. Many Coon Rapids homes still have the original narrow casing and clamshell base, and owners often replace it when they add a built-in, so we run the new base into the cabinet ends and carry the crown across the top. We build in Blaine and Andover as well.

Photos (optional)

Up to 3: one wide shot of the area, one close-up of the opening or trim, one of anything you're unsure about.

How do you want your quote?

Free, no obligation. Every quote is written and itemized, so you can compare it line by line.

What you supply

  • Photos of the wall or corner straight on, with a tape across it, the ceiling height and any outlets or registers
  • What it holds: books, a TV and gear, coats and boots, games and toys
  • Paint-grade or stain-grade, and whether the bottom is open shelves or doored cabinets
  • Cabinet knobs, pulls and any TV mount; we install them
  • Painting is quoted as a separate line — or leave it primed and caulked and paint it yourself

What JMB supplies

  • A sketch to your measurements with bay widths, shelf spacing and cabinet heights
  • Plywood boxes on a leveled base or toe kick, screwed to the studs
  • Poplar face frames for paint, or hardwood plywood and solid edges for stain
  • Shelves with a hardwood nosing so they stay straight under books
  • Doors on concealed hinges and drawers on full-extension slides where you want them
  • Scribed end panels, crown or a top rail, and baseboard returned into the cabinet ends
  • Openings cut for outlets and cable, coordinated with a licensed electrician when new wiring goes in
  • Photos of the finished built-in in your job folder

How it is priced: per project

Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:

  • Width and height of the wall, and the number of bays
  • Open shelves vs. base cabinets with doors or drawers
  • Paint-grade poplar and MDF vs. stain-grade hardwood plywood
  • Floors and walls far out of level or plumb that need heavy scribing
  • A lower-level slab that needs a raised toe kick
  • Working around a fireplace, window, register or outlet
  • Matching new base and crown when the old clamshell trim is replaced too

A straight-on photo with a tape across the wall, the ceiling height, and a note on paint or stain lets us sketch it and price it.

How long it takes

A bench and hooks at a split-level entry: one to two days. A bookcase or media wall: three to five days on site. Painting after, as its own line or on your own schedule.

Situations and options

Rambler living room wall

Bookcases on both sides of the fireplace or the picture window, with base cabinets below and shelves above, tied into the room's base and crown so it reads as part of the house.

Split-level entry bench

A bench with cubbies under it and a rail of hooks above, built to the narrow landing at the front door so boots and coats stop piling on the steps.

Lower-level media wall

Cabinets for the gear, open shelves on each side and a TV wall between, set on a raised toe kick over the slab, with the wiring planned for a licensed electrician.

Custom Built-Ins in Coon Rapids, MN: questions, answered

What kind of built-ins work in a Coon Rapids rambler?

The most common is a wall of bookcases or cabinets on the long living room wall, often on both sides of a fireplace or a picture window. A bench under a window or a desk wall in a spare bedroom also fits a rambler well. We sketch it to your wall so the bays line up with the window and the outlets.

Can you build a bench and hooks at a split-level front entry?

Yes. A split-level entry is a small landing, so the bench is shallow and built to the exact width of the wall, with cubbies under it and a hook rail above. It is screwed to the studs and trimmed to match the entry casing. Send a photo from the front door looking in and one from the landing.

Will a built-in fit if my walls and floor are not straight?

Yes. Older homes are rarely level or plumb, so we level the base with shims, then scribe the end panels and the top to the wall and ceiling. That is what keeps the face frame straight and closes the gap that a store-bought bookcase would leave. It is part of the job, not an extra.

Is a basement built-in safe on a concrete floor?

We keep the cabinet boxes off the slab on a raised toe kick and use materials that tolerate a lower level. If the basement has a history of water, fix that first; a built-in is the wrong thing to put against a wet wall. Tell us about any past water when you send photos.

Do I need a permit for a built-in in Coon Rapids?

A cabinet or bookcase fastened to an existing wall is usually finish work. If the project adds wiring, moves a wall or frames a new opening, we check with the City of Coon Rapids building department and pull a permit when it is required. New circuits are wired by a licensed electrician.

How do I get a price on built-ins in Coon Rapids?

Send a straight-on photo of the wall with a tape measure across it, the ceiling height, and what you want it to hold. We reply within one business day. You can also book a free in-home estimate and we measure and sketch it at the house.
