Board and Batten Wall in Coon Rapids, MN — and Wainscoting

You want a board and batten wall in a Coon Rapids bedroom or entry, and the old clamshell base and narrow casing are going to fight it unless they change too.

A board and batten wall in Coon Rapids, MN usually goes in a bedroom or an entry of a 1960s–80s rambler or split-level. JMB Builders lays out battens to the windows first, swaps the old clamshell base for a flat base the battens can land on, and leaves it filled, caulked and primed. Wainscoting is the same job at a lower height. Priced per wall; send photos and we reply within one business day.

  • Priced per wall
  • Battens laid out to windows and doors
  • Clamshell base replaced so battens land flat

Bedrooms and entries are where Coon Rapids owners ask for board and batten. A rambler bedroom has one plain wall behind the bed that suits it, and a split-level entry has a short wall at the landing that takes a cap rail with hooks.

The original trim is the catch. Houses here from the 1960s to the 80s usually still have narrow clamshell base, which is rounded on top, so a batten has nothing flat to sit on. We pull it and run a taller flat base on that wall so the battens die into it cleanly. The window casing gets the same look when the battens meet it, or we add a back band so the casing stands proud of the new boards.

Layout comes before any cutting. We mark batten spacing across the whole wall so it lands even at both corners and on each side of a window, and we check the ceiling line before setting a top rail, because a ceiling that dips over the center of a room shows against a level rail. Outlets get box extenders. We do the same walls in Anoka and Brooklyn Park.

Photos (optional)

Up to 3: one wide shot of the area, one close-up of the opening or trim, one of anything you're unsure about.

How do you want your quote?

Free, no obligation. Every quote is written and itemized, so you can compare it line by line.

What you supply

  • A straight-on photo of each wall, the wall length and ceiling height
  • Full height, two-thirds height or chair-rail height, and the batten spacing you like
  • Hooks or a shelf for the cap rail if you want them; we mount them
  • Painting is quoted as a separate line — or leave it primed and caulked and paint it yourself

What JMB supplies

  • A batten layout marked on the wall before cutting, centered on windows and corners
  • MDF or pine battens and rails, or PVC for a mudroom or bathroom wall
  • Old clamshell base removed and a flat base run on that wall
  • Back band or new casing where the battens meet a window or door
  • Box extenders at outlets and switches
  • Nail holes filled, seams caulked and everything primed
  • Photos of the finished wall in your job folder

How it is priced: per wall

Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:

  • Wall length and height: full height vs. two-thirds vs. chair-rail height
  • Number of battens, set by the spacing you choose
  • Replacing the clamshell base on the wall, or on the whole room
  • Windows and doors in the wall that need casing changed or a back band
  • Textured walls that need a skim coat or a panel behind the battens
  • MDF, pine or PVC

Send a straight-on photo of the wall, a close-up of the base and casing, and the wall length and ceiling height.

How long it takes

One bedroom accent wall: about one day. An entry wall with a cap rail and hooks: one to two days. A wall that needs a skim coat adds a day for drying.

Situations and options

Bedroom wall behind the bed

Full-height board and batten or a grid pattern on one wall, with the clamshell base on that wall swapped for flat base so the battens land square.

Split-level entry with hooks

Board and batten to about two-thirds height on the landing wall with a cap rail and a row of hooks, trimmed into the entry casing.

Wainscoting with a chair rail

Flat panels or battens to chair-rail height with a cap, for a hallway or dining area where a full-height wall would be too much.

Board and Batten Wall in Coon Rapids, MN — and Wainscoting: questions, answered

Do I have to replace my clamshell baseboard to add board and batten?

On the wall getting the battens, yes. Clamshell base is rounded on top, so a batten has nothing flat to stop against and the joint never looks right. We replace the base on that wall, or on the whole room if you want the trim to match all the way around.

Can board and batten go around a window in a Coon Rapids rambler?

Yes. We lay out the spacing so a batten lands on each side of the window, then either run the battens into the casing or add a back band so the casing sits proud of them. Narrow original casing usually looks better with a back band added.

How high should wainscoting be in an entry?

Chair-rail height is common in a hallway, and about two-thirds of the wall works well in an entry with hooks on the cap rail. In a small split-level entry, the higher cap keeps coats and wet boots off the painted wall. We mark it on the wall so you can see it before we cut.

Will board and batten work on a textured wall?

The battens go on fine, but texture shows in the panels between them once painted. For a smooth look the wall gets a skim coat or a thin panel goes behind the battens first. A close-up photo of the wall tells us which it needs.

Do you do board and batten walls in Anoka and Brooklyn Park too?

Yes. JMB Builders is a licensed Minnesota contractor based in Zimmerman, and we do accent walls in Coon Rapids, Anoka, Brooklyn Park and the rest of the Twin Cities metro. The layout and pricing work the same in each city.

Does JMB paint the board and batten wall?

We can. Every wall is left filled, caulked and primed, and painting is quoted as a separate line. Or leave it primed and caulked and paint it yourself.
