Custom built-ins in Blaine, MN are mostly three jobs: mudroom lockers and a bench by the garage door, a desk wall in a home office, and a media wall with cabinets and shelves. JMB Builders, a licensed Minnesota contractor based in Zimmerman, builds them on site in Blaine's older ramblers and its 1990s–2000s and new homes, paint-grade or stain-grade. Priced per project; send photos and we reply within one business day, or book a free in-home estimate.

  • Priced per project
  • Lockers, desks, media walls, bookcases
  • Built on site and trimmed to the room

In Blaine's 1990s–2000s homes and its newest builds, the door from the garage usually opens into a laundry or a short hall with a few hooks on the wall. That is where most built-in requests start: lockers with a bench, cubbies for boots, and a shelf above for the things that come in with the groceries. We build them to the wall between the door and the laundry, and fit them around the trim that is already there.

Home offices are the second. A spare bedroom gets a desk wall with drawers, upper shelves and a spot for the printer, built to the window and the outlets. The third is a media wall in the family room or, in the older ramblers and split-entries, the lower-level rec room, with cabinets for the equipment and the TV mounted between shelves.

Every built-in is plywood boxes screwed into the studs, face frames, shelves with a hardwood nosing, and trim that matches the house: crown carried across the top, base returned into the ends. New wiring for lights or outlets is done by a licensed electrician before the boxes go in. We build in Andover and Spring Lake Park too.

Photos (optional)

Up to 3: one wide shot of the area, one close-up of the opening or trim, one of anything you're unsure about.

How do you want your quote?

Free, no obligation. Every quote is written and itemized, so you can compare it line by line.

What you supply

  • Photos of the wall straight on with a tape across it, and the ceiling height
  • What it needs to hold: coats and boots, files and a printer, a TV and gear
  • Paint-grade or stain-grade, and the hardware you want
  • Your TV mount if one goes in the wall; we install it
  • Painting is quoted as a separate line — or leave it primed and caulked and paint it yourself

What JMB supplies

  • A sketch to your measurements with locker, desk or bay sizes
  • Plywood boxes on a leveled base, screwed into the studs
  • Face frames, doors on concealed hinges and drawers on full-extension slides
  • Lockers with hooks, a bench with cubbies or a lift-up lid, and a shelf above
  • Desk tops at writing height with a grommet for cords
  • Crown, base and casing fitted to match the room
  • Openings for outlets and cable, with any new circuit wired by a licensed electrician
  • Photos of the finished built-in in your job folder

How it is priced: per project

Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:

  • Width and height of the built-in and the number of lockers, bays or drawers
  • Doored cabinets and drawers vs. open shelves and cubbies
  • Paint-grade vs. stain-grade
  • A bench with cubbies vs. a bench with a lift-up lid
  • Working around a door, window, register or laundry hookups
  • Lights or outlets in the built-in, with the electrical by a licensed electrician

A photo of the wall with a tape measure across it and a note on what it needs to hold is enough to sketch it and price it.

How long it takes

A row of mudroom lockers with a bench: two to three days. A desk wall or media wall: three to five days on site. Painting after.

Custom Built-Ins in Blaine, MN — Mudroom, Office, Media Wall: questions, answered

Can you build mudroom lockers by the garage door in my Blaine house?

Yes, it is the built-in we are asked for most in newer homes. We build lockers with hooks, a bench with cubbies or a lift-up lid, and a shelf above, to the wall between the garage door and the laundry. Send a photo of that wall with a tape across it.

How deep should mudroom lockers be?

Deep enough to hang a winter coat without it sticking past the face, and shallow enough to keep the hall open. In a tight entry we make the bench and lockers shallower and add more hooks. We sketch it to your space and you approve the sizes before we build.

Can a built-in desk go in a spare bedroom?

Yes. We build a desk wall with drawer bases, a top at writing height, upper shelves and a grommet for cords, fit to the window and outlets. It is screwed to the studs, so it does not move, and if you sell later it reads as a feature of the room.

Can you wire lights or outlets into a built-in?

Yes, with a licensed electrician doing the electrical. We plan where the wire runs and cut the openings, and the electrician installs the circuit. If the work needs a permit, we check with the City of Blaine building department and it is pulled.

Paint-grade or stain-grade built-ins, which should I pick?

Paint-grade matches painted trim and costs less: poplar face frames on MDF or plywood boxes. Stain-grade is hardwood plywood with solid edges in oak, maple or another species so the grain shows. Painting or staining is quoted as a separate line, or you can finish it yourself.

Do you build custom built-ins in Andover and Spring Lake Park too?

Yes. JMB Builders is a licensed Minnesota contractor based in Zimmerman, and we build in Blaine, Andover, Spring Lake Park and across the Twin Cities metro. Send photos and we reply within one business day.
