Custom Built-Ins in Monticello, MN

You have a wall in your Monticello house that wants shelves or cabinets, and a store-bought bookcase would look like furniture parked against it.

Reply within one business day. Or call / text 763-204-2099.

Custom built-ins in Monticello, MN are bookcases, fireplace cabinets, mudroom lockers and window seats built on site to the wall they stand on. JMB Builders, a licensed contractor based in Zimmerman, builds them to match stained millwork in the older homes near the river or the painted trim in newer houses along I-94. Each built-in is priced as one project; send photos, or have us measure at a free in-home estimate.

  • Priced per project
  • Built on site, scribed to your walls
  • Stain-grade to match old millwork, or paint-grade

Monticello has two kinds of houses, and a built-in has to suit whichever one it goes into. In the older river-town core the millwork is often wide, stained casing with plinth blocks at the base. A built-in there looks right only when its face frame, base and top are in the same wood tone and the same proportions as the trim around it, so we build it stain-grade and size the base to line up with the plinth blocks.

In the newer neighborhoods along I-94, most of the trim is painted and the rooms are bigger and plainer. That is where people ask for cabinets on both sides of a fireplace, a bookcase wall in an office, or lockers and a bench by the garage door. We build those paint-grade, with poplar face frames over plywood or MDF boxes, and tie the crown and base into what is already in the room.

Either way the boxes are screwed to the studs, scribed to walls that are never quite plumb, and shelves get a solid wood nosing so they stay straight under books. Stain or paint can be its own line on the quote; you can also take it primed and caulked and finish it.

What you supply

  • What the built-in is for: books, a TV, coats and boots, or a window seat
  • Stained to match the existing millwork, or painted
  • Cabinet knobs and pulls if you have picked them; we install them

What JMB supplies

  • A drawing of the piece on your wall: bays, shelf spacing, cabinet height
  • Plywood or MDF boxes screwed to the studs and scribed to the walls and floor
  • Poplar face frames for paint, or oak and other hardwoods to match stained trim
  • Plywood shelves edged in hardwood, set on pins or fixed in dadoes
  • Base and crown tied into the room's existing trim
  • Openings for outlets and registers; any new wiring by a licensed electrician
  • Painting or staining when you want it, quoted as its own line
  • Photos of the finished built-in in your job folder

How it is priced: per project

Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:

  • How wide the wall is, how tall the ceiling is, and how many bays fit
  • Stain-grade hardwood matched to older millwork vs. paint-grade poplar and MDF
  • Open shelves vs. base cabinets with doors or drawers
  • Matching a wide casing or plinth-block base detail from the older homes
  • Working around a window, fireplace, register or outlet
  • Old walls and floors far enough out of plumb to need heavy scribing

Send a straight-on photo of the wall with a tape measure across it, the ceiling height, and a close-up of the nearest trim so we can see the profile and finish.

How long it takes

A bookcase wall or a pair of fireplace cabinets: three to five days on site. A stain-grade piece matched to old trim runs longer. Finish work after, on your schedule.

Situations and options

Stain-grade to match older millwork

For the older homes near the river: hardwood face frames and a base detail sized to the existing plinth blocks and wide casing, stained to sit with the original wood.

Fireplace cabinets with shelves above

Doored base cabinets on each side of the fireplace and open shelves above, matched in height and tied into the mantel. A common ask in the newer great rooms.

Garage-entry lockers and bench

Open lockers with hooks, a bench with cubbies under it and a shelf on top, built where the family comes in from the garage.

Window seat with drawers

A seat box under a window with drawers or a lift lid, cased so the window trim and the seat read as one piece.

Custom Built-Ins in Monticello, MN: questions, answered

Can a new built-in match the stained trim in an older Monticello home?

Usually, yes. We build the face frames and base in a hardwood close to the existing wood and size the base to line up with the plinth blocks and casing around it. A sample of the stain is mixed and tested on an offcut before the built-in is finished. Send a close-up photo of the trim in good light so we can see the species and the profile.

What does it cost to build in bookshelves?

Built-ins are priced per project. The width of the wall, the ceiling height, cabinets versus open shelves, and stain-grade versus paint-grade set the number. There are no prices on this site; send photos with a tape across the wall and we reply within one business day, or book a free in-home estimate.

Are your built-ins made in a shop or on site?

They are built and fitted on site. The boxes go in level and are screwed to the studs, then scribed to the walls and floor, and the face frame goes on across the boxes so the bays line up. That is how a built-in ends up tight to a wall that is not straight, which a factory cabinet cannot do.

Do I need a permit for a built-in?

Most cities do not ask for a building permit for shelves and cabinets alone, but new wiring for lights or outlets is permitted work done by a licensed electrician. We check with the City of Monticello building department when a built-in includes wiring or changes a wall, and pull the permit when one is needed.

Can you put cabinets on both sides of my fireplace?

Yes. Base cabinets go on each side with shelves above, kept the same height on both sides and tied into the mantel and the room's trim. We keep the clearances the fireplace maker calls for. A photo of the whole fireplace wall with the side walls showing is enough to sketch it.

Do you build built-ins outside Monticello?

Yes. We are based in Zimmerman and build in Monticello, Big Lake, Otsego and across the Twin Cities metro. Text us photos of the wall and we reply within one business day, or we can come out for a free in-home estimate.
