Custom built-ins in Andover, MN: JMB Builders builds entertainment walls in finished basements, lockers and benches at the garage entry, bookcases beside the family-room fireplace and desks in spare bedrooms, mostly in paint-grade wood to suit 1980s–90s two-stories and splits. Built on site and scribed to the walls. Priced per project; send photos and we reply within one business day, or set up a free in-home estimate.
- Priced per project
- Built on site, scribed to the walls
- Paint-grade or stain-grade

Andover's 1980s–90s two-stories and splits were built with plenty of space and very little storage. The garage entry usually lands in a laundry room or a short hall with a single closet, the family room has a fireplace with flat walls on either side, and the basement was left unfinished.
Those are the three places we build most here. Lockers and a bench at the garage door. Bookcases or cabinets beside the fireplace, sized so the mantel line carries across. And in a finished basement, an entertainment wall or a bar back built on a plinth off the concrete.
Most of it is paint-grade to go with trim that has been or will be painted, though stain-grade oak works when the main floor keeps its original oak. Walls in these houses are drywall over studs, which makes the build quicker than in older plaster houses. We had an install in Andover in April 2026 and build the same pieces in Anoka and Ham Lake.

Custom Built-Ins in Andover, MN: questions, answered
Can you build lockers at the garage entry in my Andover house?
Yes. We measure the wall at the garage door and lay out cubbies, hooks and a bench to fit, often where a small closet or bare wall is now. If a closet is removed, we patch the floor and trim around the new unit.
What do built-ins beside a fireplace usually include?
Most have doored cabinets at the bottom and adjustable shelves above, with the cabinet top near the mantel height. Face frames and crown are sized to the room. We draw it to your wall before building.
Can a basement built-in sit on a concrete floor?
It sits on a plinth so the plywood is off the bare slab, and the back is kept off a foundation wall that can be cool and damp. We leave access to any shutoffs or ducts behind it.
Paint-grade or stain-grade for a built-in in a 1990s house?
Paint-grade is the common choice when the trim is painted or will be. Stain-grade oak makes sense when the room keeps its original oak trim. We quote it either way.
Can you build around my TV and speakers?
Yes. We plan the TV height, cord paths and ventilation for components in the drawing. Any new outlets or low-voltage boxes are placed before the panels close, with electrical done by a licensed electrician.
Do you build built-ins in Anoka and Ham Lake?
Yes. JMB Builders is based in Zimmerman and builds lockers, bookcases and entertainment walls in Andover, Anoka, Ham Lake, Coon Rapids and across the north metro.
