A board and batten wall in Plymouth, MN most often goes in a mudroom with a hook rail or on one wall of a home office, with wainscoting in a dining room. JMB Builders lays the battens out on the wall first, extends outlet boxes, uses PVC where the floor gets wet and leaves the work caulked, filled and primed, or in stain-grade wood to match older trim. Priced per wall; quote from photos or a free in-home estimate.
- Priced per wall
- PVC battens in wet mudrooms
- Paint-grade or stain-grade

In the 1990s and 2000s Plymouth two-stories, the mudroom off the garage takes a beating: wet boots, hockey bags, a dog. Board and batten to about two-thirds height with a deep cap and a hook rail protects the drywall and gives the coats a place to go. Below the cap we often use PVC or pine instead of MDF, since a wet MDF batten swells.
Offices are the other common room. One wall behind the desk gets full-height battens, or the whole room gets a lower wainscot with a cap. Everything is marked on the wall in tape so you see the spacing around the window and the door before we cut.
In older homes with stained trim, a painted batten wall can look out of place. There we build it in stain-grade wood, or use raised or flat panels with a stained cap that matches the casing. We do these walls in Golden Valley and Brooklyn Park too.

Board and Batten Wall in Plymouth, MN: questions, answered
What is the best material for board and batten in a mudroom?
PVC or pine below the cap, because mudrooms get wet and MDF swells when it soaks up water. Above the splash zone MDF is fine and paints smooth. We leave every seam caulked and every nail hole filled.
Can board and batten be stained instead of painted?
Yes. In a Plymouth home with stained oak or birch trim we build it in stain-grade wood and finish it to match. It takes longer than paint-grade because the joints have to be tight without caulk.
Can you add hooks to a board-and-batten wall?
Yes. We build a deeper cap or a separate hook rail and lay out the battens so the hooks land on solid wood. Bring your hooks or we can supply them.
Do I need a permit for board and batten in Plymouth?
Applying trim to a wall is finish work. Moving an outlet or switch is done by a licensed electrician, and most cities require a permit for wiring changes; we check with the City of Plymouth building department.
How long does a board and batten wall take?
Most single walls take a day. A mudroom with a hook rail takes one to two days. A skim coat on heavy texture or a stained finish adds time.
How is a board and batten wall priced in Plymouth?
Per wall. Height, spacing, material, texture and the number of openings move the number. Send a photo with the length and ceiling height and we reply within one business day, or book a free in-home estimate.
