A board and batten wall in Anoka, MN, or wainscoting in a dining room or hall, is laid out by JMB Builders to the room: batten spacing taped on the wall first, the cap set level even when the floor is not, and outlet boxes brought flush. Old plaster and newer drywall both work. Priced per wall; send photos and we reply within one business day, or book a free in-home estimate.
- Priced per wall
- Layout taped on the wall first
- Plaster or drywall, paint or stain

In Anoka's early-1900s homes, wainscoting usually fits better than a modern board-and-batten grid. Beadboard or flat panels under a cap at chair height, finished in the same tone as the casing, look like part of the house. We lay the panels out so they end evenly at doors and windows and the cap lines up with the window stool.
The catch in those houses is the floor. When a dining room drops from one side to the other, a cap that follows the floor looks crooked, and a cap set dead level leaves a tapering base. We tape both lines on the wall so you can see them and pick before anything is cut.
In the postwar ramblers and 1970s–80s splits, the ask is usually a full-height board-and-batten wall behind a bed, or a two-thirds wall with hooks by the back door. Orange-peel or knockdown texture gets a skim coat or a backing panel so it reads flat under paint. We build these walls in Coon Rapids and Champlin as well.

How it is priced: per wall
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:
- Wall length and height: full height, two-thirds or chair height
- Board-and-batten vs. beadboard vs. flat-panel wainscoting
- Paint-grade vs. stain-grade material
- Out-of-level floors and plaster walls that take scribing
- Wall texture that needs a skim coat or backing panels
- Outlets, switches, windows and registers in the wall
Send a straight-on photo of each wall, a close-up of the texture, and the length and ceiling height.
How long it takes
One accent wall: about a day. A dining room wrapped in wainscoting: two to three days. A skim coat adds a day for drying.

Situations and options
Beadboard wainscoting
Vertical beaded boards under a cap at chair height. A good fit for older dining rooms, halls and baths, painted or stained.
Flat-panel wainscoting
Rails and stiles framing flat panels, the more formal look. Panel widths are laid out so they land evenly between openings.
Full-height board and batten
Battens from base to ceiling on one wall, usually behind a bed or a sofa in a rambler or split-level. Spacing is set so the end bays match.
Entry wall with a hook rail
Two-thirds height battens with a deeper cap and hooks set between the battens, by the back or garage door.
Board and Batten Walls & Wainscoting in Anoka, MN: questions, answered
What style of wainscoting fits an older Anoka home?
Beadboard or flat-panel wainscoting at chair height, with a cap that matches the casing, usually fits early-1900s rooms best. Modern full-height batten grids can look out of place there. We look at the trim in your photos and suggest what sits with it.
My dining room floor slopes. Will the wainscoting look crooked?
Not if the cap line is chosen on purpose. A level cap looks straight to the eye but leaves the base tapering; a cap that follows the floor keeps even reveals but can look tilted. We tape both on the wall so you can see them before we cut.
Can board and batten go on plaster walls?
Yes. We find the studs, predrill where the plaster is hard, and fasten into framing rather than the plaster. Adhesive is used sparingly on plaster so the wall is not damaged if the trim ever comes off.
Can wainscoting be stained to match my existing trim?
Yes, with stain-grade wood instead of MDF. We stain a sample board first so you can hold it next to your casing. Old trim has aged, so the goal is a close blend.
How high should a board and batten wall go?
Full height suits a single feature wall. Two-thirds height leaves room for a second color above and works well in entries. Chair height is the classic wainscot line in dining rooms. We line the cap up with window stools or other trim in the room when we can.
Do you install board and batten in Coon Rapids and Champlin?
Yes. JMB Builders is based in Zimmerman and builds board-and-batten and wainscoting walls in Anoka, Coon Rapids, Champlin, Ramsey and across the north metro.
