A board and batten wall in St. Cloud, MN, or wainscoting to chair-rail height, is planned on the wall before it is built: JMB Builders marks the spacing so battens and panels land evenly between windows, doors and corners. We install it in primed MDF, pine or PVC, extend outlet boxes, fill and caulk, and leave it ready for paint. Priced per wall. Send photos and we reply within one business day.
- Priced per wall
- Spacing marked before cutting
- Panel or picture-frame wainscoting

In St. Cloud's 1990s-and-newer homes on the south side, board and batten goes where a builder left a plain wall: behind the bed, in an office, at a back entry with hooks. In the century-old houses near downtown and the university, people ask for wainscoting instead: flat or raised panels, or picture-frame boxes, at a height that works with the casing and base already in the room. Mid-century homes can go either way.
The work is mostly layout. Battens are spaced so the end ones are not slivers, a window does not split a panel in an odd place, and the cap rail runs level even when the floor does not. On textured drywall we skim or panel the wall first; on old plaster we check for loose spots before fastening. Painting is a separate line on the quote, or we leave it primed and caulked for you.

How it is priced: per wall
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:
- Wall length and height, and how tall the treatment runs
- Number of battens or picture-frame boxes
- Textured drywall needing a skim coat or panel
- Old plaster with loose or cracked spots
- Windows, doors, registers and outlets in the wall
- MDF, pine or PVC, and whether the cap carries a shelf or hooks
Send each wall straight on and a close-up of its surface. Tell us whether it is plaster or drywall if you know.
How long it takes
One accent wall: a day. A dining room of wainscoting: two to three days. Skim coats add a day for drying. Booked on a Highway 10 trip with other work in St. Cloud and Sartell.

Situations and options
Full-height board and batten
Battens floor to ceiling with a top rail, usually on one feature wall. Spacing is set from the wall's width so the end bays match.
Two-thirds wall with a cap
Battens up to a cap rail or a narrow shelf, often with hooks along the rail. Common in back entries and mudrooms.
Picture-frame wainscoting
Molding boxes below a chair rail, sized so the boxes are even across each wall. Suits dining rooms and halls in older homes.
Flat-panel wainscoting
Stiles and rails over a smooth panel under a cap, a heavier look that sits well with wide casing and tall base.
Board and Batten and Wainscoting Walls in St. Cloud, MN: questions, answered
Should an older St. Cloud house get board and batten or wainscoting?
Usually wainscoting. Panel or picture-frame wainscoting fits the wide casing and tall base common in older homes, while board and batten reads newer. In the back entry or mudroom of an older house, board and batten with a hook rail can still work well.
Can wainscoting go on old plaster walls?
Yes. We check the plaster for loose or hollow spots, fasten into studs where we can and use construction adhesive along the rest. Plaster walls are seldom flat, so panels and rails are scribed and caulked to sit tight.
How do you space board and batten on a wall with a window?
We measure the wall and the window and set the spacing so battens land evenly on both sides of the window casing instead of crowding it. The layout is marked in pencil on the wall for you to see before any cutting.
Do I need to remove the texture from my walls first?
Heavy knockdown or orange-peel texture shows between battens. We either skim-coat the wall smooth or cover it with a thin backing panel; light texture can sometimes be left. A close-up photo of the wall decides it.
Who paints the board and batten when it is done?
We can. Painting is quoted as a separate line, after the trim is filled, caulked and primed. Or we leave it primed and caulked and you paint it yourself.
Can board and batten go in a bathroom?
Yes, in PVC. Bathrooms get steam and splashes, and MDF swells when it gets wet, so PVC battens and rails are the safe choice near a tub or shower. Caulk along the top of the base keeps water out of the joint.
