A drop zone charging station is a small built-in by the door you actually use: a cabinet or short bench with a cubby per person, a shelf or drawer for phones with the chargers hidden below, and hooks above. The drop zone is the little brother of the mudroom. Most houses do not have room for a full bench-and-locker wall, but almost every house has a short stretch of wall between the garage door and the kitchen, or at the end of a cabinet run, that is doing nothing. A cabinet or a short bench with a cubby for each person, a charging shelf and a row of hooks turns that wall into the place things land.
The charging part is what makes it work. A shelf or a shallow drawer sits at counter height with a grommet or a slot at the back, and the power strip lives in the cabinet below it. Cords come up through the hole, the phones sit on the shelf, and nothing is on the counter. If the wall has an outlet, the strip plugs into it. If it does not, a licensed electrician adds one inside the cabinet before we close it up.
We build it on site from MDF or poplar for paint, or plywood with a hardwood face for stain, and trim it to the room: a base to match the baseboard, a cap or a countertop on top, and hooks or a cubby rail on the wall above. It is a one- to two-day job.

Cabinet by the garage door
A counter-height cabinet the width of the wall with a door below, a charging shelf on top under a short backsplash, and hooks above. The version for a narrow hallway.
Bench with cubbies
A bench seat over open cubbies for shoes, a cubby rack above with a slot per person, and the charging shelf at the end where the outlet is. For wider walls, usually right inside the garage door.
End of the kitchen run
A cabinet built to the depth and height of the kitchen cabinets, with the same door style, so the drop zone reads as part of the kitchen. A charging drawer with a cord slot at the back.
Charging drawer only
A shallow drawer with a slot at the back added to an existing cabinet or a new one, with the power strip fixed inside the cabinet below. The smallest version of the job.

What is a drop zone in a house?
A small spot by the door you actually use, usually the garage door, where keys, mail, bags and phones land instead of the kitchen counter. Built in, it is a short cabinet or bench with a cubby per person, a shelf or drawer for charging, and hooks above. It does the job of a mudroom on a wall that is only a few feet wide.
How does a built-in charging station work?
A shelf or a shallow drawer sits at counter height with a grommet or a slot cut in the back. The power strip is fixed inside the cabinet below and plugs into a wall outlet behind it. The charger cords come up through the hole, and the phones and tablets sit on the shelf or in the drawer. Nothing shows but the cord ends.
Do I need an electrician for a charging station?
Only if there is no outlet on that wall. If there is one where the cabinet goes, the power strip plugs into it and no electrical work is needed. If there is not, a licensed electrician adds an outlet inside the cabinet; we leave the back open for them and close it up after. We can coordinate that visit.
How much wall space does a drop zone need?
A counter-height cabinet with a charging shelf and hooks fits on a wall as narrow as a single door. A bench with a cubby per person needs more, roughly a foot and a half of width for each cubby, plus room for the charging shelf. Send the wall width and how many people use the door and we lay it out to fit.
Can the drop zone match my kitchen cabinets?
Yes. When the drop zone is at the end of a kitchen run or in the kitchen itself, we build it to the same depth and height, use the same door style and paint it to match, so it reads as another cabinet. If you have a leftover door or a spare panel from the kitchen, we can use it.
Can it be a bench instead of a cabinet?
Yes. A bench version has the seat at sitting height with open cubbies under it for shoes, a rack of cubbies or hooks above at eye level, and the charging shelf built into one end or the top of the cubby rack. It needs a wider wall than a cabinet does.
