Vinyl vs Fiberglass Windows for Apartments — Picking the Frame
The building needs new windows, the board or the owner wants one material for every unit, and the vinyl and fiberglass quotes in the file are hard to lay side by side.

Vinyl vs fiberglass windows for apartments comes down to color, frame stiffness and what the whole building costs. JMB Builders prices both on one bid, opening by opening: vinyl such as Pella 250 or ProVia Endure, fiberglass such as Pella Impervia, and Andersen's Fibrex 100 Series in between. Buildings across the Twin Cities metro to St. Cloud. Photo reply within one business day, or a free walkthrough.
- Priced per opening, both materials on one bid
- Every opening measured in person
- Installed unit by unit, closed the same day

On a house the material choice is about one family's taste. On an apartment building it is a choice you live with across every unit for the next owner, the next manager and the next round of turnovers. The questions are practical: which exterior color the building needs, how many styles the line makes, whether the frame holds a dark color, and how the cost adds up over dozens of openings.
Vinyl is the price leader. Pella rates its 250 Series vinyl 52% stronger than ordinary vinyl and offers it in White, Almond or Fossil, or a White interior with a Brown or Black exterior. ProVia's Endure is a foam-filled vinyl frame with painted exterior colors. Fiberglass is the stiffer frame: Pella states its Impervia Duracast fiberglass won't warp or sag in heat or turn brittle in cold, and it moves at nearly the rate of glass. Andersen's 100 Series is Fibrex composite, which Andersen rates at about twice the strength of vinyl.
We put both on one bid with the same opening list, so the only thing that changes between columns is the material. Before we bid, we check the city's contractor licensing and permit rules for that building. Andersen is confirmed at our Minnesota ABC Supply branches; for Pella and ProVia lines we confirm the line with our ABC branch before the bid is final.

How it is priced: per opening
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:
- Material: vinyl, Fibrex composite or fiberglass
- Dark or dual-color exterior versus white or almond
- Window style mix: sliders and single-hungs versus casements
- Glass package, including foam-filled frames or triple-pane where offered
- Insert into the old frame or full frame with new exterior capping
- Upper-floor openings that need ladders or staging
- Units that need furniture moved or work scheduled around tenants
Send a photo of each building elevation, one typical window inside and out, and the unit count. Ask for both materials and we price the same list twice.
How long it takes
Lead time depends on the brand and is written on the quote. Once windows arrive, a unit typically takes one to two working days; the building schedule is set with you.

Situations and options
All vinyl
The lowest cost per opening and the widest style list. White or almond outside, or a dual-color frame with a dark exterior on lines that offer it, such as the Pella 250.
All fiberglass
Pella Impervia in five solid colors or a White interior with a dark exterior. Stiff, slim frames. Triple-pane only on awning, casement and picture units, per Pella.
Fibrex composite
Andersen 100 Series, the one line confirmed at our Minnesota ABC branches. Dark Bronze and Black exteriors. No double-hung in the line and dual-pane only.
Mixed by elevation
Fiberglass or Fibrex on the street side where color matters most, vinyl on the back. Colors from two lines rarely match exactly, so we check samples side by side first.
Vinyl vs Fiberglass Windows for Apartments — Picking the Frame: questions, answered
Is vinyl or fiberglass better for an apartment building?
Neither wins every building. Vinyl costs less per opening and comes in the most styles. Fiberglass is the stiffer frame and holds dark colors; Pella states Impervia won't warp or sag in heat or turn brittle in cold. We price both on the same opening list so the owner can see the difference before choosing.
Can vinyl apartment windows be black on the outside?
Some can. Pella's 250 Series offers a White interior with a Black or Brown exterior, and ProVia's Endure offers painted exterior colors. ProVia's ecoLite is white only. We bring samples so the board or owner picks from the actual line being ordered.
Is Andersen Fibrex the same as fiberglass?
No. Fibrex is Andersen's composite of reclaimed wood fiber and thermoplastic polymer, used in the 100 Series. Andersen rates it at about twice the strength of vinyl and offers it in Dark Bronze and Black. Fiberglass, such as Pella Impervia, is a different material.
How do I compare a vinyl bid and a fiberglass bid for the same building?
Make the opening list identical: same units, same sizes, same install type, same glass. Then only the material changes. Our bid lists each opening by unit, so the two columns line up line by line.
Does the material change how the windows are installed in an apartment?
The install steps are the same: sill pan, flashing tape, low-expansion foam and sealant at every opening. Heavier glass packages need two people on the sash. What changes more is insert versus full frame, which depends on the old frames and the siding or brick.
Can different buildings in our complex use different materials?
They can, but it costs you later in parts and screens. Most owners pick one line for the whole complex. If budgets differ by building, a vinyl and a fiberglass line can be priced building by building on one bid.
