Ground Floor Apartment Patio Door Security — Locks and New Doors
First-floor tenants are asking about their sliders after a break-in nearby.

Ground floor apartment patio door security starts with a door that closes tight and a lock that catches. JMB Builders adjusts or replaces the lock, adds a secondary foot lock where the door allows it, reinforces the strike on hinged doors, or replaces worn sliders with a line whose locking options suit first-floor units. Twin Cities metro, priced per door. Photos get a reply within one business day, or book a free in-home estimate.
- Priced per door, upgrade or replacement
- Lock options confirmed per door line
- Every lock still opens from inside

A ground-floor slider faces a patio or lawn that anyone can walk up to. Old sliders are easy to work on from outside: the panel has dropped on worn rollers, the latch barely reaches the keeper, and on some the panel can be lifted out of the track. A new lock on a door like that does little.
So the first step is the door itself. If it is sound, we raise the rollers, reset the keeper so the latch catches fully, and add a secondary foot lock or a track lock where the frame allows one. If it is worn out, a replacement door is the fix, and the line is picked with the lock in mind: some patio door lines offer keyed locks, extra locking points or laminated glass to order. What a line offers is confirmed on the quote, not promised in general.
Hinged patio doors get a reinforced strike plate with long screws into the framing. Every lock we add still has to open from inside without a key, since the patio door may be an exit; the building official decides what is allowed. Before we bid a building of five or more units, we check the city's contractor licensing and permit rules for that building.

How it is priced: per door
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:
- Upgrade the existing door vs. replace it
- Lock and glass options available in the chosen line
- Condition of the rollers, track and keeper
- Frame or jamb damage from a break-in
- Hinged door vs. slider
- Number of ground-floor doors done together
Send a photo of the door from outside, the lock from inside, and the keeper on the jamb.
How long it takes
Lock upgrades: several doors in a day. A replacement door: typically a day per unit once the doors arrive. Lead time depends on the brand and is written on the quote.

Situations and options
Tune and add a secondary lock
For a sound slider: rollers raised, keeper reset, and a foot lock or track lock added so the panel cannot slide or lift when it is locked.
Replace with a better-locking door
For worn sliders. A new door picked for its locking options, set on a sill pan and adjusted so the lock catches every time.
After a break-in
Bent frames, torn keepers and split jambs repaired or the door replaced, with photos for the owner's file.
Ground Floor Apartment Patio Door Security — Locks and New Doors: questions, answered
How can a ground floor apartment patio door be made more secure?
Start with the door: raise worn rollers and reset the keeper so the latch catches fully. Then add a secondary foot lock or track lock. If the door is worn out, replace it with a line whose locking options suit a first-floor unit.
Can you add a foot lock to apartment sliding doors?
On most sliders, yes, where the frame and sill give a solid place to mount it. It pins the panel so it cannot slide or lift. We look at each door and say which ones can take one.
Is a keyed lock allowed on an apartment patio door?
A key from outside is fine on many doors, but the door has to open from inside without a key, since it may be an exit. Double-keyed locks are generally not allowed on exit doors. The building official decides for your building.
Does laminated glass stop a patio door break-in?
No glass stops a determined person, but laminated glass holds together when it is broken, which slows entry. Some patio door lines offer it to order. Whether your chosen line does is confirmed on the quote.
Should a landlord replace the patio door or just upgrade the lock?
Upgrade when the door is sound and the panel sits tight in the track. Replace when the rollers, track or frame are worn so the panel moves or lifts even when locked. The walkthrough gives a door-by-door answer.
Can you fix a patio door frame damaged in a break-in?
Yes. Torn keepers, bent frames and split jambs are repaired, or the door is replaced if the frame is too far gone. The owner gets photos for their file; any insurance claim is the owner's to file.
