Entry door replacement in Minneapolis, MN: JMB Builders measures the opening, orders a prehung door in the size and swing it needs, removes the old door and frame, rebuilds the sill, sets the new unit in a pan with flashing, and fits it to your stucco or siding outside and your stained casing inside. Priced per door, from photos or a free in-home estimate.

  • Priced per door, the door included
  • Old, non-stock openings measured and fit
  • Stained casing reused or matched

On a Minneapolis house from the 1910s to the 1940s, the front door is often still a wood slab in its first frame, sometimes with a glass lite, sometimes planed down so many times it no longer fills the opening. The walls are thick with plaster, so the jamb is wider than a stock door's, and the opening is rarely a stock size. Inside, the casing is stained fir or oak with plinth blocks that nobody wants damaged.

We plan the door around that trim. The inside casing is pried off carefully, labeled and set back, or where it is split, new casing is milled and finished to blend with the original. The new prehung unit is ordered to the rough opening with a jamb that fits the wall, set on a sill pan, and flashed. On a stucco story-and-a-half, the stucco is cut back around the old brickmould and sealed to the new trim.

Side doors onto the driveway landing and back doors into the kitchen get the same treatment; they usually have worse sills because they take the snow. General contractors also hire us for window and door scopes on Minneapolis renovations. Our job log has nine installs here from December 2025 through September 2026, all for dealers and builders. Painting is quoted as a separate line — or leave it primed and caulked and paint it yourself.

Photos (optional)

Up to 3: one wide shot of the area, one close-up of the opening or trim, one of anything you're unsure about.

How do you want your quote?

Free, no obligation. Every quote is written and itemized, so you can compare it line by line.

What you supply

  • Your pick of door style, material, glass and color
  • Hardware finish, or the handle set you want to keep
  • Photos of the door from both sides, the sill and the inside casing up close
  • Stain or paint color for the door and any new trim

What JMB supplies

  • Measurement of the rough opening and the order for a prehung door with the right jamb width
  • Careful removal of the inside casing, labeled for reuse, or new casing milled to match
  • Removal and haul-away of the old door and frame
  • Rebuilt sill framing and subfloor where they are soft
  • Sill pan, flashing, foam and sealant; stucco cut back and sealed or siding trimmed
  • Lockset, deadbolt and weatherstrip adjusted so the door latches and seals
  • A check with the City of Minneapolis building department and the permit when one is needed
  • Photos of the finished door in your job folder

How it is priced: per door

Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:

  • The door: steel, fiberglass or wood, solid or with glass
  • A non-stock size or an extra-wide jamb for a plaster wall
  • Reusing the original casing vs. milling new casing to match
  • Stucco, lap siding or brick around the outside
  • Rot in the sill, the threshold framing or the subfloor
  • Front, side or back door, and steps or a landing at the sill
  • Staining or painting, quoted as a separate line

Send the door from both sides, the sill, and a close-up of the casing corner so we can see the profile.

How long it takes

One entry door: about a day on site in a sound opening. A stucco patch, sill rebuild or new milled casing adds time. The door is ordered after you approve the quote.

Front Entry Door Replacement in Minneapolis, MN: questions, answered

Can you replace my front door without ruining the original woodwork?

Yes. The inside casing comes off with a flat bar, a piece at a time, and is labeled so it goes back where it came from. If a piece splits or the new jamb is wider, we mill and finish new casing to blend with the old. The plinth blocks and stool are left in place where we can.

What if my old Minneapolis front door is not a standard size?

That is common in houses from before the 1950s. We measure the rough opening once the trim is off or from inside the jamb, then order a prehung unit sized to it or adjust the framing so a standard unit fits cleanly. Either way the door is ordered after measuring, not guessed from the old slab.

Does Minneapolis require a permit to replace an entry door?

A same-size swap is often handled differently from widening the opening or replacing a header. We check with the City of Minneapolis building department for your door and pull the permit when one is needed. Any fee is a line on the quote.

Should I keep my original wood front door or replace it?

If the slab is sound and you like it, new weatherstrip, a threshold and an adjusted strike may be enough. Replace it when the frame is rotted at the bottom, the door is split or warped, or it no longer seals no matter how it is adjusted. We tell you which from the photos.

Do you replace side and back doors on Minneapolis houses too?

Yes. Side doors onto the driveway landing and back doors into the kitchen often have the worst sills on the house because snow piles against them. They are replaced the same way, as a prehung unit on a sill pan with the subfloor checked.

Do you work for general contractors on Minneapolis renovations?

Yes. General contractors hire us for window and door scopes on Minneapolis remodels and insurance repairs, quoted per opening. Send the plans or a list of openings and the schedule.
