Mounting a TV over a fireplace is two problems. The first is what is behind the surface: full-depth brick or stone, a thin stone or brick veneer over sheathing and studs, or a drywall chase framed around a gas insert. Each one is anchored differently and getting it wrong on veneer means the anchor pulls the veneer off the wall.
The second problem is height. A fireplace puts the TV above the mantel, which puts the center of the screen well above eye level. A pull-down mantel mount fixes that: the TV rides on arms that lower it in front of the mantel to watch and push it back up when you are done. It is heavier and needs better fastening than a flat mount, so the anchoring has to be planned around it.
Heat is the last check. A wood-burning fireplace or a gas unit with no mantel can put more heat on the TV than the manufacturer allows. We check the temperature above the mantel with the fire on when there is any doubt and tell you if the TV should go somewhere else.

Situations and options
Pull-down mantel mount
Arms that lower the TV in front of the mantel to watch and lift it back up. Solves the too-high problem on almost every fireplace. Needs the heaviest anchoring of any mount, so the wall behind it has to be checked first.
TV on brick or block
Holes drilled with a hammer drill into the brick or block units, sleeve or wedge anchors set, mount bolted to the anchors. Never into the mortar joints; they crumble.
TV on stone veneer
Manufactured stone veneer will not hold an anchor. We drill through the veneer into the studs or add blocking behind it, and use long structural screws so the mount hangs on the framing, not the stone.
TV on a drywall chimney chase
A framed box around a gas insert, usually with studs every so often and nothing where the mount lands. We open the drywall, add blocking, patch, and mount. Painting the patch is its own line.

Is it OK to mount a TV above a fireplace?
Usually, with two conditions. The TV has to stay below the temperature the manufacturer allows, which a mantel helps with by pushing heat out into the room. And the height has to be watchable, which usually means a pull-down mount. If you burn wood most nights and there is no mantel, we will tell you the heat is a problem and suggest a different wall.
How do you mount a TV on a stone fireplace?
It depends on the stone. Solid natural stone or block takes masonry anchors drilled into the stone. Manufactured stone veneer is a thin shell over sheathing and studs, so we drill through it to the framing and hang the mount on long structural screws into the studs or blocking. Send a close-up photo and we can usually tell which you have.
Can you mount a TV on a brick fireplace without damaging the brick?
The mount needs holes in the brick; there is no way around that. We drill into the face of the brick units rather than the mortar, use sleeve anchors sized for the mount, and keep the holes to the bracket footprint. If the TV ever comes down, the holes are behind where any future mount would go.
What is a pull-down TV mount for a fireplace?
A mount on spring-assisted arms that lets you pull the TV down and forward in front of the mantel to watch it at eye level, then push it back up above the mantel when you are done. It fixes the neck-craning problem of a TV over a fireplace. It is heavier than a flat mount and the whole load swings out from the wall, so the anchoring has to be into masonry or framing.
Where do the wires go when the TV is over the fireplace?
Not through the chimney chase if there is a working flue in it. Usually the cables go down the side of the fireplace inside the wall to a cabinet or console beside it, or across to a closet. On solid brick or stone there is no wall cavity, so cables run in a painted surface raceway or through a cabinet built beside the fireplace. Power above the mantel is a licensed electrician's job and we arrange it.
Will the heat from my gas fireplace damage a TV mounted above it?
It can if the fireplace has no mantel or hood to push the heat out into the room. Most gas inserts with a mantel are fine. We hold a thermometer at the TV location with the fire running when there is any doubt, and compare it to what the TV maker allows. If it is too hot, a deeper mantel or a heat deflector fixes it, or the TV goes on a different wall.
