Hiding TV wires in a wall means two rated openings — one behind the TV, one down at the console — and the cables fished inside the stud bay between them. The catch in most Twin Cities houses is what is inside the wall: fire blocking halfway up in older homes, insulation on exterior walls, and existing wiring that a fish tape snags on. We open the drywall where we have to, drill the blocking, and patch it.
Power is the part people get wrong. A power cord, extension cord or power strip cable is not rated to run inside a wall. The right way is a recessed outlet behind the TV, wired by a licensed electrician, or a listed in-wall power kit that puts an outlet behind the TV and an inlet at the console with rated cable between them. We install the low-voltage side; the electrician does the line-voltage side and it goes on the quote as its own line.
Cord covers are the other option. A paintable surface raceway from the TV to the console hides the cables without opening the wall. It is the right answer on brick, on a wall you rent, or on an exterior wall full of insulation.

Send a photo of the TV wall with the console in it and note whether the wall backs onto the outside. That tells us if fire blocking or insulation is likely.
How long it takes
Straight drop on an interior wall: about an hour. With fire blocking drilled and patched: half a day. The electrician's outlet is a separate short visit.

Low-voltage in-wall drop
Two brush plates and the cables fished between them. HDMI, speaker and antenna cable only — no power cord. The standard job on an interior drywall wall.
Recessed outlet behind the TV
A licensed electrician adds a recessed box behind the TV, fed from the outlet below, so the TV plugs in flush and the mount sits flat. We open and patch the wall; the electrician wires it.
In-wall power kit
A listed kit with an outlet behind the TV, an inlet at the console and rated cable between them, plugged into the existing outlet. No new circuit. Where the electrician is still required, the kit is installed by the electrician.
Paintable cord cover
A surface raceway from the TV to the console, painted to match the wall. The choice on brick, stone, rental walls, or an exterior wall full of insulation. Hides the cables without a hole in the wall.

Can you run the TV power cord inside the wall?
No, and neither should anyone else. A power cord or extension cord is not rated for inside a wall. The right way is a recessed outlet behind the TV wired by a licensed electrician, or a listed in-wall power kit with rated cable between an outlet behind the TV and an inlet at the console. We run the low-voltage cables and arrange the electrician for the power side.
What is the difference between a cord cover and in-wall concealment?
A cord cover is a paintable channel screwed to the face of the wall with the cables inside; it takes an hour, needs no patching and works on any wall. In-wall concealment puts the cables inside the stud bay behind two plates so nothing shows. In-wall looks better and is the usual choice on drywall; a cord cover is the answer on brick, stone, a rental, or an insulated exterior wall.
Can you hide TV wires in an exterior wall?
Usually, but it is more work. Exterior walls are full of insulation and often have a vapor barrier, so the cables have to be fished carefully and the plates sealed so the wall does not leak air. On a very tight or foam-insulated wall a surface raceway is the better answer. Tell us if the TV wall backs onto the outside and we quote it for that.
What is fire blocking and why does it matter for hiding TV wires?
A horizontal block between the studs partway up the wall, common in older homes and in walls that run more than one story. It stops fire from moving up inside the wall, and it stops a fish tape too. We find it, cut a small opening, drill a hole through it for the cables, and patch the drywall. It adds a couple of hours and a patch, and we tell you from the photo when it is likely.
Do I need a recessed outlet behind my TV?
If you want the TV flat to the wall with no visible cord, yes, or an in-wall power kit. A recessed box lets the plug sit inside the wall so a fixed or tilt mount can sit tight to the drywall. It is a licensed electrician's job; we open the wall, coordinate the electrician, and patch after. If the existing outlet is right behind the TV already, a low-profile plug is sometimes enough.
Can you hide the wires for a TV that is already mounted?
Yes. We take the TV off the mount, cut the openings behind it and at the console, fish the cables, set the plates, and rehang the TV. Most of the time the upper plate hides completely behind the TV. If the TV is over a fireplace or on masonry, the route is different and there is a page for that.
