A shop wall is not a house wall. A pole barn has posts several feet apart and horizontal girts between them, with steel screwed to the outside and sometimes a steel liner inside. There is no stud where the TV needs to go, and the steel will not hold a lag. An attached garage is closer to a house wall, but it may be fire-taped drywall that should not be opened casually, or bare studs.
On open framing we add vertical blocking between the girts, lagged at both ends, and mount to that. On a lined wall we find the posts and girts behind the liner and put up a plywood backer board lagged into them, then mount the TV to the board; it also gives you a place for a shelf or a remote hook. Overhead, a ceiling mount on a truss or a block between trusses gets the TV above the lift or the truck.
Cold and dust matter in a shop. Many TVs list an operating temperature range; in an unheated Minnesota garage it can be below that for months, so check your manual and let it warm up before turning it on. Cable is run in raceway along the girts or inside the liner, and a new outlet near the TV is wired by a licensed electrician.

Situations and options
Blocking between girts
On an unlined pole barn wall, vertical 2x blocking lagged between two girts gives the mount solid wood where the TV goes. The cleanest option on open framing.
Backer board on a lined shop wall
A plywood panel lagged into the posts and girts behind a steel or wood liner, painted, with the TV mounted on it. Room on the board for a shelf, speaker or remote hook.
Ceiling swivel mount
A drop-down mount from a truss or a block between trusses, so the TV hangs above the lift, the bench or the truck. Set high enough for the overhead door and anything on the lift.
Attached garage wall
Drywall over studs, like a house wall. If it is the fire-taped wall shared with the house, we mount into studs without opening it, and cables run on the surface in raceway.

How do you mount a TV on a pole barn wall with steel siding?
Into the wood framing, never the steel. A pole barn has posts several feet apart and horizontal girts between them. We add vertical blocking between two girts, or on a lined wall a plywood backer board lagged into the posts and girts, and mount the TV to that. Screws into steel alone will not hold a TV.
Can a TV be mounted on a steel liner panel in a shop?
Not on the liner by itself. The liner is thin steel over the girts. We find the girts and posts behind it, lag a backer board through the liner into them, and mount the TV to the board. The holes through the liner are covered by the board.
Is it OK to put a TV in an unheated garage in Minnesota?
Many TVs list an operating temperature range in the manual, and an unheated Minnesota garage drops below it in winter. Storing it cold is less of a problem than turning it on cold. If the garage is not heated, check the manual, let the space warm up before using it, and consider a TV rated for outdoor or covered-patio use.
Can you mount a TV on the ceiling of a garage?
Yes. A ceiling mount is fastened to a truss or to blocking between trusses, and the drop is set so the TV clears the overhead door track and anything on a lift. Tell us the clearance you need and send a photo of the ceiling.
Can you add an outlet for the TV in my shop?
A new outlet or circuit is wired by a licensed electrician. We set the mount and blocking so the outlet goes where the TV will cover it, and we run the low-voltage cable and power cord neatly in raceway to the outlet.
