The projector and the screen are in boxes, the ceiling is drywall with joists somewhere behind it and the throw distance has to be right — we mount it, hide the cables and hang the screen.

A projector mount holds several pounds off the ceiling on a stalk, and every bit of flex shows on the screen as a shake. So the mount goes into a ceiling joist or into blocking we add between joists, not into drywall anchors. In a finished basement that means finding the joist, or opening a small patch and adding a block that gets patched and painted back. In an unfinished ceiling it is a bolt into the joist and done.
Where the projector sits is set by the projector, not by us: each model has a throw ratio that says how far back it has to be for the screen size you bought. We work that out from the manual before we drill, and we mark the screen center on the wall so the lens, the screen and the seats line up. A short-throw projector on a shelf or a cabinet is a different job and we say so.
Cables are the rest of it. A long HDMI run inside the ceiling to the equipment rack, power at the projector, and a wire for a motorized screen. An outlet at the ceiling or at the screen box is a licensed electrician's line on the quote; the low-voltage runs are ours. Setting focus, keystone and picture modes is a ten-minute job in the projector's menu and stays with you.

How long it takes
Projector and fixed-frame screen on an open ceiling: half a day. Finished ceiling with a blocking patch, a long HDMI run and a motorized screen: a full day, plus paint drying on the patch.

Situations and options
Ceiling mount on an open joist ceiling
The simplest version. Mount bolted to the joist, cables stapled along the joists to the rack, screen hung on the wall. Common in unfinished basements.
Finished ceiling with blocking
We locate the joist, and when the mount lands between joists we open a small patch, screw in a block, close it, and patch and paint. The cable goes in through the same hole.
Motorized or pull-down screen
The screen box mounts to blocking at the ceiling line or in a recess above the drywall. Motorized screens need power at the box and a trigger wire to the projector when you want the screen to drop on its own.
Drop ceiling or vaulted ceiling
A drop ceiling gets a bracket to the joists above the grid with the tile cut around the stalk. A vaulted ceiling gets an angled or extended mount so the projector hangs level.

Can you mount a projector on a drywall ceiling?
Yes, into a joist or into blocking behind the drywall, never into the drywall alone. We find the joist with a detector and a test hole; if the mount pattern does not land on one, we cut a small opening, add a block between the joists, close it and patch it. The projector mount then has solid wood behind every bolt.
How far from the screen does the projector need to be?
It depends on the projector's throw ratio and your screen width, and the manual or the maker's online calculator gives the range. We work it out before drilling so the image fills the screen without digital zoom. If the room is too short for the projector you bought, we say so, and a short-throw model or a smaller screen is the fix.
How do you hide the HDMI cable for a projector?
Inside the ceiling and down the wall to where the receiver or streaming box sits, ending at a wall plate at each end. We use an in-wall rated HDMI cable of the right spec for the length; long runs sometimes need an active or fiber HDMI cable, and we tell you which before we pull it. Surface raceway is the fallback on a concrete or finished ceiling we cannot get into.
Do you set up and calibrate the projector?
We mount it, aim it, run the cables and confirm a picture is on the screen. Focus, keystone, lens shift and picture settings are a few minutes in the projector's own menu, and those stay with you along with the streaming apps and receiver setup. If the image is a trapezoid after we leave, lens shift or keystone in the menu squares it.
Can you install a motorized projector screen?
Yes. The screen box mounts to the ceiling framing or to blocking on the wall, level and centered on the projector. It needs power at the box, which is an outlet a licensed electrician adds if there is not one, and a trigger wire to the projector if you want the screen to drop when the projector turns on.
Can you add surround sound speakers at the same time?
Yes, and it is the time to do it because the ceiling is open at the projector. We pull speaker wire to the rear and side positions, mount the speakers or put in wall plates, and run it all to the receiver. See the soundbar and speaker page for what that job includes.
