Most bathrooms do not need a gut. The tub is fine, the toilet works, the layout is the only one that fits. What is dated is the floor, the vanity, the trim and the door. That is a carpentry and tile job with a plumber for two hours, and it is what this page covers: a hall bath, kids' bath or powder room updated without moving a pipe.
The order matters. Old vanity and floor out, subfloor checked, tile set and grouted, then the vanity goes on top of the finished floor so the toe kick and the tile meet cleanly. Base, casing and a new door go on after that, the plumber sets the faucet and drain and swaps the shutoffs, and paint is last. Doing it in that order is what makes it look like it was built that way instead of updated.

- Size of the room and the tile pattern: straight-lay porcelain is fastest, small hex or herringbone takes longer

- Replacing the door and casing vs. keeping them and painting
- Plumber time: a faucet and shutoff swap vs. a new tub or shower valve

Situations and options
Floor and vanity only
Keep the door and trim, replace the floor and the vanity. The base gets pulled and reset on the new tile so there is no gap under it.
Full hall bath refresh
Tile floor, vanity and top, new base and casing, new door and hardware, mirror and light hung, walls and trim painted. Everything except the tub and toilet, and the toilet gets a new wax ring and seat.
Refresh plus tub surround
Add a tiled tub surround to the floor and vanity job. The surround needs a plumber for the valve and spout, and it adds about three days to the schedule.
Powder room
A half bath is a one-week job: floor, vanity, trim, paint. Pedestal sinks and wall-hung vanities need blocking in the wall, which we open and close before the tile.

Do you do small bathroom remodels without moving plumbing?
Yes, that is most of what we do in bathrooms. The tub, toilet and vanity stay where they are; the floor, vanity cabinet, top, trim, door and paint get replaced. The plumber reconnects everything in its existing spot. Moving a drain or a supply line means opening the floor or wall and is a bigger job we quote separately.
Who does the plumbing on a vanity replacement?
A licensed plumber. We set the vanity and the top, and the plumber connects the faucet, the drain and new shutoff valves, and resets the toilet. Anything that touches a supply, drain or valve is their work, not ours, and it is included in our quote as a line.
Should the tile go under the vanity or around it?
Under. We tile the whole floor and set the vanity on top of it. That way the toe kick sits on finished tile, there is no cut edge showing if the next vanity is a different size, and a leak under the sink lands on tile instead of plywood.
Can I keep my bathtub and just update the rest?
Yes. A sound tub with a working valve is worth keeping; a new one means the surround comes off and the plumber replaces the valve. If the surround tile is the dated part, a new tiled surround over the existing tub is an option, and it is priced as an add-on to the floor and vanity.
What does a bathroom refresh include for trim and doors?
New base to match the rest of the house or a new profile you pick, new casing on the door, and a new door and hardware if the old one is hollow and worn. Everything goes in primed, filled and caulked. Painting the trim and door is its own line on the quote, or you can paint it.
How long is the bathroom out of service?
The toilet is out for the day the floor is tiled and back the next day once the grout has cured. The sink is out from the day the old vanity comes out until the plumber hooks up the new one, usually three to four days. The tub or shower stays usable the whole time unless the surround is part of the job.
