Roof and Gutters Replaced Together — One Job, One Drip Edge Detail
The roof is due and the gutters are sagging, seamed or pulling off the fascia, and you want to know whether to do them together, in which order, and what it saves.
Roof and gutters replaced together is the order that works: the old gutters come down with the tear-off, rotted fascia behind them is replaced while it is exposed, the new drip edge goes on with the roof, and new seamless gutters hang on sound fascia with the drip edge lapping into them. JMB Builders does both across the Twin Cities metro as one scope with one setup. Priced per project, gutters as their own line.
- Gutters off with the tear-off, fascia fixed while exposed
- Drip edge laps into the new gutter, not behind it
- One scope, one setup, gutters as their own line

Gutters and the roof edge are one assembly. The fascia board carries the gutter, the drip edge covers the top of the fascia and directs water off the roof into the gutter, and the gutter apron or drip edge has to lap into the gutter so water does not run down behind it. When the roof is replaced and the gutters stay, the drip edge gets tucked behind the old gutter as best it can, the rotted fascia behind the gutter stays hidden, and the gutter hangers that were loose stay loose. When the gutters are replaced later, the new installer works around a finished roof edge they cannot change.
Doing both at once fixes the order. The old gutters come down on tear-off day. With the gutters off, the fascia is in plain view; soft or rotted sections, which are common behind gutters that have overflowed for years, are replaced before anything goes back. New drip edge goes on at the eave over sound fascia. Then new seamless gutters are hung on the new fascia with hidden hangers into the rafter tails, pitched to the downspouts, and the drip edge laps inside the back of the gutter. That detail is what keeps a Minnesota eave from rotting again.
It also saves a setup. The crew, the ladders and the dumpster are already there; the gutters are formed on site from coil and hung the day the roof finishes or the next morning. On the scope the gutters are their own line so you can see the cost and leave them off if yours are sound. If the gutters are good, we take them down where needed to get the drip edge right and rehang them on tightened hangers.
What you supply
- Photos of the roof and of the gutters from below, especially where they sag, leak at seams or pull away from the house
- Your gutter color choice from the coil samples and the shingle color at the same estimate
- Where you want downspouts to discharge, and any underground drains they tie into
- Driveway space for the dumpster; gutter coil and the forming machine come in a trailer
What JMB supplies
- Old gutters and hangers removed with the tear-off and hauled with the roofing debris
- Fascia inspected with the gutters off, rotted sections replaced and primed, quoted per foot in the scope
- New drip edge at the eaves, under the ice and water shield, set to lap into the new gutter
- Seamless aluminum gutters formed on site, hidden hangers into the rafter tails, pitched to the downspouts
- Downspouts sized and placed for the roof area, with extensions or tie-ins at the ground
- The full roof replacement above it, the city's permit and inspection, magnet sweep, finished photos in your job folder
How it is priced: per project
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:
- Linear feet of gutter and number of downspouts, as its own line on the scope
- Gutter size: standard or oversized where a large roof drains to a short run
- Fascia repair found with the gutters off, quoted per foot
- Gutter guards added at the same time, as their own line
- Height of the eaves and a walk-out back, which affects the gutter hanging as much as the roof
- The roof itself: squares, pitch, layers, decking, access
A photo of each gutter run from below and one of the roof edge tells us whether the fascia behind the gutter is sound. The scope shows the gutters separately so you can decide.
How long it takes
Gutters come down on tear-off day and new ones hang the day the roof finishes or the next morning. The whole job adds about half a day to the roof on most houses.

Situations and options
Roof plus new seamless gutters
The standard package. Old gutters off with the tear-off, fascia checked and repaired, new drip edge, new seamless gutters and downspouts hung on the finished roof edge.
Roof with existing gutters rehung
When the gutters are sound. We drop them where needed to set the drip edge correctly, clear them of tear-off debris and rehang them on tightened or new hangers.
Roof, gutters and guards
Guards fit best on new gutters with a new drip edge, because the guard sits under the drip edge and over the gutter lip. One setup for all three.
Roof and gutters after hail
Hail that bruised the shingles usually dented the gutters too. Both go on the claim scope as separate lines, and both are done in one setup.
Roof and Gutters Replaced Together — One Job, One Drip Edge Detail: questions, answered
Should I replace my gutters when I replace my roof?
If they are sagging, leaking at seams, undersized, pulling off the fascia, or dented by the same hail that took the roof, yes. The gutters have to come down or be dropped for the drip edge anyway, the fascia behind them is exposed for repair only when they are off, and the crew and dumpster are already there. If the gutters are sound seamless aluminum on good fascia, keep them; we drop and rehang them as part of the roof.
Do gutters go on before or after the roof?
After. The order is: old gutters off, fascia repaired, drip edge on at the eave, ice and water shield over the drip edge, shingles, then the new gutters hung on the fascia with the drip edge lapping inside the back of the gutter. Gutters installed before the roof get in the way of the drip edge and end up with it tucked behind them, which sends water down the fascia.
Do roofers take the gutters off to replace a roof?
If the gutters are being replaced, they come off on tear-off day and go in the dumpster. If they are staying, we drop them where needed to get the drip edge over the fascia and into the gutter, clear the tear-off debris out of them and rehang them on tightened hangers. A roof done with the gutters left tight to the fascia usually has the drip edge tucked behind the gutter, which is backwards.
What if the fascia behind the gutters is rotted?
It often is, especially on north eaves and under valleys where gutters have overflowed for years. With the gutters off we see it, replace the soft sections with new fascia board, prime it, and hang the new gutter on solid wood. On the scope fascia repair is quoted per foot so a surprise is only a known price times the footage we find. A gutter hung on rotted fascia pulls off in the first ice.
How much does adding gutters to a roof job save compared to doing them separately?
One setup instead of two: the ladders, the trailer, the dumpster and the trip are already on the scope for the roof, and the fascia is already exposed. We do not put dollar figures on a page; the gutters appear as their own line on the scope with the roof, so you can compare them to a stand-alone gutter quote. The bigger saving is the drip edge detail done right the first time.
Can hail-damaged gutters go on the same insurance claim as the roof?
Yes, as their own lines. The adjuster's scope usually lists gutters and downspouts by the foot when they are dented, and we photograph the dents with a scale when we inspect the roof. If the adjuster's scope leaves them off, they go in the supplement with photos. Both are done in the same setup, and the deductible covers the whole claim once.
