Hail-Dented Gutters and Downspouts Claim — Replace, Reset or Guards

The roofer wrote the shingles. Nobody wrote the gutters, which are dented every six inches on the north side, the downspout by the garage is split, and the mesh guards are crushed into the trough. Those are lines too.

A hail damaged gutters and downspouts claim is written in linear feet: gutter by the LF and size, downspouts by the LF, gutter guards by the LF, and often a detach-and-reset line for the roofer. JMB Builders handles the gutter side across the Twin Cities metro: dented runs replaced in seamless aluminum to match, torn downspouts replaced, guards replaced or reset, and the lines written to match the scope. Priced per linear foot.

  • Priced per linear foot, like the scope
  • Replace, or detach and reset with the roof
  • Gutter guards written as their own line

Stucco home in the Twin Cities with gutters and downspouts along the eave and the corner

Hail that is big enough to damage shingles dents aluminum gutters on the same slope. The dents are on the top of the front lip and the bottom of the trough, where the stone hits, and on the top of downspout elbows. The adjuster will often say gutter dents are cosmetic, which is true of a few. A gutter dented every few inches holds water in the low spots, splits at the seams when it freezes and does not take guards. Downspouts crushed at the elbow do not drain. Guards crushed into the trough are done.

Gutters are written on the scope in three ways. Replace, by the LF and the size, with downspouts by the LF and elbows and outlets counted. Detach and reset, which is the line the roofer needs so the gutters come off for new drip edge and go back on new hangers. And gutter guards by the LF, replaced or reset. Our estimate uses the same lines with a photo of each run, so you can see which runs are dented, which are only in the roofer's way, and which guards survived.

The order matters. Gutters come off before the roof, go on after the roof, and the fascia behind them gets looked at in between. If the hail also dented the fascia cover, that is a trim line on the same scope. We coordinate the date with the roofer so the gutters are down the morning they start and up the day they finish, and the house is not without gutters through a rain.

What you supply

  • Photos of each gutter run from the ground, the dented downspouts, and the guards if you have them, with a wider shot per side
  • The roofer's schedule if the roof is being replaced on the same claim
  • The adjuster's scope and your claim number
  • Gutter color and size if you know it; a photo of the end cap shows both

What JMB supplies

  • A run-by-run estimate in LF of gutter, LF of downspout, elbows, outlets and guards, with detach-and-reset lines where the roofer needs them
  • Seamless aluminum gutter in the same size and color, formed to each run, with new hidden hangers into the fascia
  • Downspouts, elbows and straps replaced where hail crushed them, matched in color
  • Gutter guards replaced in kind or reset after the roof, written as their own line
  • Gutters detached and reset with the roofing so drip edge and fascia can be done, on new hangers
  • Fascia cover behind the gutters checked and noted for the trim lines on the claim
  • Before-and-after photos per run in your job folder

How it is priced: per linear foot

Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:

  • LF of gutter that is dented enough to replace vs. runs that are only detached and reset
  • Gutter size and whether the color is still made
  • Number of downspouts, elbows and outlets replaced
  • Guards: replaced by the LF, or reset, and what type they are
  • One-story eave from a ladder vs. a two-story eave on staging
  • Fascia or sub-fascia found bad behind the gutter, repaired as a trim line

Send one photo per side of the house showing the gutter line and a close shot of a dented run with a coin or tape in it. We reply within one business day with which runs look like replace and which look like reset.

How long it takes

Gutters down the morning the roof starts and back up the day it is finished. Replacement runs on a one-story house: a day. Guards go on after the gutters are hung.

Situations and options

Replace dented runs

Runs with dents every few inches along the lip and trough are replaced in seamless aluminum of the same size and color, hung on new hidden hangers with the right pitch to the outlets. Downspouts and elbows replaced where crushed.

Detach and reset with the roof

The gutters are sound but the roofer needs them off for new drip edge. We take them down the morning the roof starts, store them, and rehang them on new hangers when the roof is done. This is its own line on most scopes.

Gutter guards

Mesh and screen guards crushed by hail are replaced in kind by the LF. Guards that survived are removed before the roof and reset after. Either way they are their own line, and the adjuster often leaves them off until someone points at them.

Fascia behind the gutters

With the gutters down, the fascia cover and sub-fascia are in plain sight. Hail-dented fascia cover is a trim line on the same claim; rotted sub-fascia found behind it is a repair we quote separately. Both are fixed before the gutters go back up.

Hail-Dented Gutters and Downspouts Claim — Replace, Reset or Guards: questions, answered

Will insurance replace gutters that hail dented?

Often yes when the dents are frequent enough to affect how the gutter drains or holds up, and sometimes no when there are a few dents the adjuster calls cosmetic. Some policies have a cosmetic exclusion for metal; ask your agent. We photograph each run with a scale reference and write the LF so the decision is made on what is there, not from the driveway.

How are gutters written on a hail roof claim?

By the linear foot and size for gutter, by the LF for downspouts with elbows counted, by the LF for guards, and a separate detach-and-reset line for gutters that come off for the roof and go back. Our estimate uses the same lines so it can be set next to the adjuster's. The guards and the detach-and-reset line are the two most often missing.

Do the gutters have to come off for a hail roof replacement?

If the roofer is replacing the drip edge, yes, because the drip edge goes under the gutter apron and over the fascia. The scope should carry a detach-and-reset line for that. If the roof is not being replaced and the gutters are the only damage, they are replaced on their own and nothing else moves.

Are hail-damaged gutter guards covered on the claim?

Guards are a line item like the gutters, written by the LF, and most adjusters will include them when they are shown crushed mesh. They are also the item most often left off because they are hard to see from the ground. Photograph them from a ladder if you can, or we do. Guards that survived still have to come off and go back on for the roof, which is a reset line.

Will the new gutters match the color of the old ones?

White and the common browns, yes, from current coil. Older colors and faded runs may not match exactly, and we photograph the new against the old for the file. If only one side of the house needs new gutters and the match is poor, Minnesota's matching rule for replacement-cost policies may apply; that is between you and your insurer, and ask your agent.

Should the downspouts be replaced if only the elbows are crushed?

Elbows and the straps are replaced on their own when the straight runs are sound. A downspout split along the seam or crushed flat is replaced full length. The scope usually writes downspouts by the LF with elbows counted, so a run with two new elbows and sound pipe is a short line, not a whole downspout.
