Cabinet door repair for rental units is the kitchen and bath work on a turnover list: a door hanging off one hinge, a drawer that has jumped its slides, a drawer front pulled off the box, stripped screw holes that will not hold a hinge. Rental kitchens take a beating and the damage is almost always at the hardware, not the boxes. Hinge screws strip out of particleboard. Drawer slides bend when the drawer is yanked. A drawer front gets pulled off its box by the handle. A door swings on one hinge until it cracks the face frame. None of it is worth replacing the cabinets over, and all of it has to be fixed before the unit shows, because a prospective tenant opens every door.
JMB Builders does cabinet repair by the unit. We walk the kitchen and the bath vanity, list every door and drawer that needs work, and fix them in the same visit: stripped screw holes plugged with hardwood and re-drilled so a hinge holds, hinges replaced with the same style or a concealed hinge on a new plate, drawer slides swapped for the same length and type, drawer fronts re-fastened through the box, doors rehung and adjusted so the gaps line up, missing pulls and knobs replaced to match the rest. A cracked face frame or a door that is split gets glued and clamped, or the door is replaced with a plain slab painted to match.
We keep the common parts on the truck: overlay hinges in the usual styles, side-mount and bottom-mount drawer slides in stock lengths, wood plugs and long screws, and a few pulls and knobs in the common finishes. Send photos of what is broken and we quote the unit before we drive. When we are done you get photos of every door closed and straight.

Situations and options
Hinge replacement and stripped holes
The door hangs crooked because the hinge screws spun out of the particleboard. We plug the holes with hardwood and glue, re-drill, and set the same hinge or a new one. The door hangs straight and the screws bite wood.
Drawer slides and drawer boxes
A drawer that drops, sticks or falls out has a bent slide or a broken box. We replace the slides in the same type and length, re-glue and re-fasten the box, and re-attach the drawer front through the box with screws that do not pull out.
Concealed hinge conversion
When the old exposed hinges are a style nobody sells, we bore the door for concealed hinges and mount plates in the box. Every door in the kitchen gets the same hinge so it all adjusts the same way on the next turnover.
Pulls and knobs to a building standard
Missing and mismatched hardware replaced with one pull and one knob across the kitchen and baths. Same holes where possible, old holes filled and painted where the new pull has a different spread.
Replacement door or drawer front
A door that is split through, delaminated or missing gets a plain slab cut to size, primed and painted to match the kitchen. Painting is quoted as its own line, or the door goes in primed for your painter.

Can cabinet hinge screws that stripped out be fixed without replacing the cabinet?
Yes, and it is the most common cabinet repair we do. The stripped hole is drilled out, a hardwood dowel is glued in, and once it sets the hole is re-drilled for the hinge screw. The screw is biting solid wood instead of particleboard crumbs, and it holds better than it did new. The cabinet and the door both stay.
Do you replace drawer slides in apartment kitchens?
Yes. Most rental kitchens have side-mount or bottom-mount slides in a few stock lengths, and we carry those. We pull the drawer, measure the slide, swap both sides, and re-set the drawer so it runs straight and stops where it should. If the drawer box is broken too, we glue and fasten it while it is out.
A drawer front came off in a rental unit. Can it be reattached?
Almost always. The front is fastened to the drawer box with screws through the box from inside, and those pull out of the front when the drawer is yanked by the handle. We plug the holes in the front, re-drill, and fasten through with the right length screw, then reattach the handle through both. If the front is split at the screws, it is glued and clamped first.
What if the cabinet hinges are an old style that is not sold anymore?
We match it if a supplier still makes something close. If not, the door is bored for a concealed hinge and a mounting plate goes in the cabinet, which is the modern standard and adjustable in three directions. We do every door in the kitchen the same way so they all line up and the next turnover is a five-minute adjustment, not a hunt for parts.
Do you do cabinet repairs by the unit or by the door?
By the unit. You send photos or a list, we quote the unit, and we fix everything on the list in one visit. That covers the kitchen and the bath vanities. If we find one more door hanging off a hinge when we get there, it goes on the same invoice at the same rate, and we tell you before we do it.
Can you replace a cabinet door that is beyond repair without replacing the kitchen?
Yes. A plain slab door or drawer front cut to the same size, bored for the same hinges, primed and painted to match the kitchen, is the usual answer in a rental. It will not be an exact match to a raised-panel door, but it closes, it is clean and it costs a fraction of a new run of cabinets. Painting is quoted as its own line, or we hang it primed for your painter.
