A two-story foyer or an open stairwell has walls you cannot reach from the floor or a regular ladder, and the tall wall is almost always over the stairs. That is where most homeowners stop. It is also the first wall people see when they walk in.
The job is set-up. A stair-leveling ladder or a ladder with a leg extension on the steps, planks between ladders or from the stair to the landing, or a rolling scaffold in a large foyer. The stairs and railing get covered, and nothing leans on the drywall or the spindles. Then the painting is ordinary: patch nail holes, cut in the ceiling line and corners straight, roll in two coats, and move the setup along the wall.
Split-level houses have the same problem on a smaller scale: the wall over the half flight going down, and the vaulted ceiling above the entry. We do those with a stair ladder and a plank. Light fixtures and chandeliers high up are worked around, or taken down and reinstalled when a licensed electrician is needed.

How do painters paint two story foyer walls?
With a stair-leveling ladder, planks between ladders or from the stair to a landing, or a rolling scaffold on the foyer floor. The stairs and railing are covered, and nothing leans on the walls or spindles. Once set up, it is ordinary painting: cut in, then roll.
How do you paint a high wall over stairs?
A ladder with an adjustable leg sits on the steps so it stands level, and a plank runs from it to the landing or another ladder. That gives a flat platform over the stairs. We move it along the wall as we go.
Do you paint the ceiling in the foyer too?
If you want it, and it makes sense in the same visit since the setup is already in place. Vaulted foyer ceilings are painted first, then the walls. Ceiling painting is its own line on the quote.
What about the chandelier in the foyer?
We paint around it and cover it. If you want it taken down for painting or replaced while the setup is up, the fixture work is done by a licensed electrician.
How long does it take to paint a two story foyer?
One to two days. Most of the time is setup and moving it, not painting. A split-level stairwell is usually a day.
Can you paint just the foyer and stairwell?
Yes. Many people paint the rest of the house themselves and leave the high walls to us. We match your wall color if you give us the can or the color name.
