Block or Paver Tree Ring — Built Without Burying the Trunk
A tree ring stops the mower from scarring the trunk and the roots. Built wrong, it buries the trunk and kills the tree in a few years. We build it the right way.
A tree ring with landscape block or pavers is a circle of block set level around the base of a tree with a mulch bed inside, so the mower stays off the roots and the trunk. JMB Builders builds them across the Twin Cities metro the way an arborist would want: the ring outside the root flare, the mulch shallow and off the trunk, and the soil at the tree never raised. Priced per tree.
- Priced per tree, block or pavers

The tree rings that kill trees are the ones that look like a volcano: a tall ring stacked around the trunk, filled with soil and mulch up the bark. Bark that stays wet rots, and soil over the root flare suffocates the roots. A tree ring that helps the tree is low, wide and set outside the flare, with a thin layer of mulch inside that stops a few inches from the trunk. The tree gets a mulched zone the mower cannot reach and the trunk stays dry.
We cut a circle in the sod outside the root flare and the surface roots, dig a shallow trench for the block, fill it with compacted base and set the block level with a string line, one or two courses at most. On a slope the ring steps down with the grade rather than stacking tall on the low side. Pavers set flush work the same way as a mowing ring the mower rides around. Inside, the sod is stripped by hand so the roots are not cut, and shredded mulch goes in shallow with a gap at the trunk.
The block comes from the supply yard in a straight or tapered shape that makes a circle without cutting, in a color that matches a retaining wall or patio if you have one. Two or three rings in a yard are done in a day.
What you supply
- Photos of each tree showing the base and the surface roots
- The block or paver: a color from the supply yard, or matched to a wall or patio you have
- How big a ring you want; we size it outside the flare and roots and tell you if it should be bigger
- Sprinkler heads marked near the trees
What JMB supplies
- Sod cut in a circle outside the root flare and the surface roots, stripped by hand over the roots
- Shallow trench with compacted base under the block
- Landscape block or pavers set level to a string line, one or two courses, stepped on a slope
- Shredded mulch inside, shallow, with a gap at the trunk
- Sod edge packed outside the ring
- Photos in your job folder
How it is priced: per unit
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:
- Number of trees in the visit
- Ring diameter, which sets the block count and the sod to strip
- Tapered landscape block vs. flush pavers vs. natural stone
- One course vs. two, and whether the ring steps on a slope
- Surface roots that mean hand work inside the ring
- Mulch vs. rock inside the ring
Send a photo of each tree from a few feet back and one of the base. We size the ring from the flare and the roots we can see.
How long it takes
One tree ring: a couple of hours. Two or three rings, or a large ring on a slope: most of a day.

Situations and options
Tapered block tree ring
Landscape block cut with a taper so a circle closes without cutting, set one or two courses, in a color to match a wall or patio. The standard ring.
Flush paver mowing ring
Pavers set flush with the lawn in a circle so the mower rides them and nothing needs trimming. Mulch or rock inside, no raised edge.
Natural stone ring
Fieldstone or cut limestone set in a loose circle, buried at the base, for a yard that already has natural stone in it.
Ring around a tree with surface roots
A larger ring set outside the exposed roots, with the sod inside removed by hand and the roots covered only by a thin mulch layer. No soil added over the roots.
Block or Paver Tree Ring — Built Without Burying the Trunk: questions, answered
Will a tree ring hurt my tree?
A low, wide ring with shallow mulch kept off the trunk will not; it helps, because the mower and trimmer stay off the roots and bark. A tall ring filled with soil and mulch piled against the trunk will, by keeping the bark wet and burying the root flare. We never raise the soil at the trunk, and we size the ring outside the flare.
How far from the trunk should a tree ring be?
Outside the root flare, the widening at the base of the trunk, and outside any roots on the surface. On a young tree that is a small circle; on a mature maple with roots showing it is a wide one. A ring the mower can go around in one pass is the practical size. We measure it at the tree and tell you if the ring you have in mind should be bigger.
Can you build a tree ring on a slope?
Yes. The ring steps down with the grade: the uphill side is one course and the downhill side two, with the mulch inside kept level and off the trunk. A ring built tall on the low side to make the top level would mean filling against the trunk, and we do not do that.
Mulch or rock inside a tree ring?
Mulch. Shredded wood mulch keeps the roots cool and moist and breaks down into the soil, which the tree likes. Rock holds heat and compacts the soil, and it is hard to keep off the trunk. If you want a rock look to match other beds, we keep it to a light rock in a thin layer with mulch at the trunk.
What about a tree with roots sticking out of the lawn?
A ring is the best fix for that. Instead of mowing over the roots and scalping them, a ring set outside the roots with mulch over them hides them and protects them. The sod inside is removed by hand so the roots are not cut, and no soil is added over them; a thin mulch layer is all they get.
Can you match the block to my retaining wall?
Yes. Most retaining wall block lines have a matching tapered block or cap made for circles, and the color is the same. Send a photo of the wall and we match it at the supply yard. The same goes for pavers that match a patio or walk.
