Accent Boulder Placement — Landscape Boulders Set by Machine
A boulder that was set right looks like it was always there; one dropped on the mulch looks like a delivery. We dig the seat, set the stone and bury its base.
Accent boulders for landscaping are single stones or small groups set in a bed, at the driveway entrance or beside a patio, placed by machine so they sit in the ground instead of on top of it. JMB Builders picks the boulders with you at the supply yard, delivers them, digs each one a seat and sets it with a mini excavator anywhere in the Twin Cities metro. Priced per project by the number and size of boulders.
- Priced per project, by boulder count and size
- Each boulder set a third into the ground
- Placed by mini excavator, lawn protected

A boulder placed on top of the mulch is the most common mistake in a front yard. It looks like it was rolled off a truck, the mulch washes out from under it, and it rocks when a kid climbs on it. A boulder that looks natural is buried a third of its height, with its flattest face up and its widest side toward the house or the street, and the bed graded up to it so the ground looks like it formed around the stone.
That takes a machine. Fieldstone and granite boulders the size people want at a driveway entrance or a bed corner weigh more than anyone moves by hand. We bring a mini excavator through the gate on mats, dig a seat for each boulder a bit bigger than its footprint, set it, turn it until the face reads right from where you look at it, and pack the soil around it. Rock or mulch goes back around the base so there is no ring of bare dirt.
Boulders come from a landscape supply yard by the ton or by the piece. We take you to pick them, or we pick from your photos and the size you want, and we tell you how many will read well in the space. Three different sizes in a loose group usually look better than three the same.
What you supply
- Where the boulders go: a bed corner, the driveway entrance, beside the patio or steps, or an address stone
- The look: rounded fieldstone, split granite, limestone, and the color you like, picked at the yard or from photos
- Sprinkler lines and low-voltage wires marked so the machine misses them
- An engraved address stone, if that is the plan, from the engraver of your choice
What JMB supplies
- Boulders picked at the supply yard and delivered, by the piece or the ton
- Mini excavator or skid loader with mats across the lawn to the spot
- Each boulder set in a dug seat, best face up, base buried, soil packed
- Bed graded to meet the stone, with rock or mulch back around the base
- Smaller stones grouped with the large one where a single boulder would look lonely
- Lawn repaired where the machine crossed, and photos in your job folder
How it is priced: per project
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:
- Number of boulders and their size, which sets the delivery weight and the machine needed
- Stone type: common fieldstone vs. granite, limestone or a hand-picked specimen boulder
- Access: next to the driveway vs. through a backyard gate on mats
- Whether the bed is being built at the same time or the boulders go into an existing bed
- An engraved address stone vs. plain boulders
- Rock or mulch to dress the base after setting
Send a photo of the spot from the street or the patio, where you look at it from, and about how tall you want the stone. We size the boulders and the machine from that.
How long it takes
A few accent boulders in front beds or at the driveway: half a day including delivery. A backyard group through a gate on mats: most of a day.

Situations and options
Driveway entrance boulders
One or two large boulders at the end of the drive, set back from the edge so the plow misses them, with smaller stones and a bed around them. Often the address numbers go on one.
Bed corner boulders
A boulder at the corner of a foundation bed where mulch always washes out, set into the bed and buried at the base, with plantings staged around it.
Patio and step boulders
Boulders beside a paver patio or a set of block steps to soften the edge and tie the hardscape into the yard. Set as the patio is built or added to an existing one.
Boulder group in a rock bed
Three or five boulders of different sizes in a loose group in a river rock bed, buried to different depths so they read as an outcrop instead of a row.
Accent Boulder Placement — Landscape Boulders Set by Machine: questions, answered
How deep should a landscape boulder be buried?
About a third of its height, give or take with the shape of the stone. That is the difference between a boulder that looks like part of the ground and one that looks set on top of it. Burying the base also keeps it from rocking and keeps mulch or rock from washing out underneath. We dig a seat for each one before it comes off the machine.
Can you put a boulder at the end of my driveway?
Yes, and most people want it there. We set it back from the pavement far enough that a snowplow or a car backing out does not catch it, and we check the sight line so it does not block the view of the street. Gopher State One Call locates buried utilities before we dig the seat, since the driveway entrance is where the gas, electric and cable usually come in.
How big a boulder can you place in a backyard?
The limit is the gate and the lawn, not the stone. A mini excavator fits through most backyard gates and lifts a boulder the size most people want beside a patio. We run it across the lawn on mats so the ruts are minor and we repair them after. A boulder too big for the mini excavator is a front-yard stone unless the backyard is open to a driveway.
Where do the boulders come from?
A landscape supply yard. Fieldstone and granite boulders are sold by the ton or by the piece, in bins sorted by size and color. We take you there to pick them, or you send a photo of a stone you like and we match it. Pricing covers the stone, the delivery and the placement, so there is no separate hauling bill.
How many boulders should I use in a landscape bed?
Fewer and bigger beats more and smaller. One large boulder with two or three smaller stones in a loose group reads as an outcrop; five the same size in a row reads as a border. Odd numbers, different sizes, and burying each to a different depth are the three things that make a group look natural. We lay them out with you before they go in.
Can you move a boulder that is already in my yard?
Yes. A boulder that was set on the surface years ago, or one that is in the way of a patio, can be lifted and reset somewhere else on the same visit. If it is bigger than the mini excavator will lift it takes a larger machine, and we tell you that from the photo. Boulders you do not want at all are hauled away.
