Playground Mulch Area With a Border — Play Area Under the Swing Set

The grass under the swings is dirt by July and mud by August. A bordered mulch area makes it soft, clean and the shape of the yard you meant to have.

A playground mulch area with a border is the ground under and around a swing set made soft and clean: the sod cut out, a treated timber or landscape block border set around the area, a fabric down, and engineered wood fiber or rubber mulch spread to depth. JMB Builders builds them across the Twin Cities metro, sized to the set's clearances, often with the playset assembled on the same visit. Priced per project by the area.

Backyard of a Minnesota home with a timber-bordered mulch play area under a swing set

A play area is a bed with a border, built to a size. The size comes from the playset: the manual gives the clearance zone around the swings and at the bottom of the slide, and the border goes outside that so a kid who jumps off a swing lands on mulch. We lay it out with paint, square to the house or the fence, and cut the sod. The ground is graded flat and a little away from anything it should drain away from, because a play area that holds water is a mud pit with a nice edge.

The border is treated landscape timbers, stacked one or two high and pinned with rebar, or landscape block set on a compacted base. Timbers are cheaper and square; block matches a patio or wall you already have and curves. A woven fabric goes down inside so the mulch stays clean and the weeds stay down. Then the mulch: engineered wood fiber, the shredded wood made for playgrounds that packs into a firm soft surface, or rubber mulch, which costs more, never breaks down and does not splinter. Either one spread to the depth the maker calls for, deeper under the swings.

If the set is not up yet, we build the area first and assemble the set on it, with the anchors through the mulch into the soil. If it is already up, we work around it. A step-over at the gate side of the border keeps the mower out and the mulch in.

What you supply

  • The playset's manual or model so we size the area to its clearances, or the size you want
  • Engineered wood fiber or rubber mulch, and the rubber color if rubber
  • Timber or block border; a photo of a wall or patio if you want block to match
  • Sprinkler heads marked in the area

What JMB supplies

  • Area laid out to the set's clearances and painted for you to approve
  • Sod cut and hauled, ground graded flat and draining
  • Treated timber border pinned with rebar, or landscape block on a compacted base
  • Woven fabric inside the border, lapped and pinned
  • Engineered wood fiber or rubber mulch delivered and spread to depth, deeper under the swings
  • Playset assembled and anchored through the mulch on the same visit if it is not up, and photos in your job folder

How it is priced: per project

Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:

  • Area of the play zone, which sets the border length and the yards of mulch
  • Engineered wood fiber vs. rubber mulch, which costs several times more per yard
  • Timber border vs. landscape block on a base
  • Mulch depth, set by the fall height of the equipment
  • Grading to flatten the spot or drain it
  • Access for the mulch delivery: dumped near the area vs. wheeled through a gate
  • Playset assembly on the same visit

Send a photo of the spot and the set, or the set's model if it is still boxed. We size the area from the clearances and the mulch from the depth.

How long it takes

A play area under a single swing set: one day. A large area with block border and rubber mulch, or with the playset assembled on it: two days.

Situations and options

Timber border with wood fiber

Treated timbers one or two high, pinned, with engineered wood fiber inside. The standard play area: square, soft, and the lowest cost. Topped up every couple of years as the fiber settles.

Block border with rubber mulch

Landscape block on a compacted base, matching a patio or wall, with rubber mulch that never breaks down. Costs more up front and needs no top-up.

Play area built with the playset

The area built first, then the set assembled and anchored on it in the same visit. The anchors go through the mulch to the soil.

Mulch area around a trampoline

The same border and mulch around an in-ground or above-ground trampoline so the landing zone is soft and the mower stays away from the frame.

Playground Mulch Area With a Border — Play Area Under the Swing Set: questions, answered

What is the best mulch under a swing set?

Engineered wood fiber for most yards. It is shredded wood made for playgrounds that knits into a firm surface, drains, and is the lowest cost per yard; it settles and gets topped up every couple of years. Rubber mulch costs several times more, never rots, never splinters and does not need topping up, and some people do not like the smell on a hot day or the look. Bagged bark mulch from the garden center is not made for falls.

How deep should playground mulch be?

It depends on the fall height of the equipment, which the playset maker gives in the manual, and it is deeper than a landscape bed. Under the swings and at the bottom of the slide it gets the most. We spread it to the depth the maker calls for and the border is set tall enough to hold it. Wood fiber settles, so it starts a little deep.

How big should a play area be?

Big enough to cover the clearance zone around the set: in front of and behind the swings, at the bottom of the slide, and around the tower. The manual gives the distances. A border set tight to the set's legs looks neat and misses the point, since the falls happen at the edge of the swing arc. We lay it out to the manual and paint it so you can see the size before we cut sod.

Timber or block border for a play area?

Timber is cheaper, square and fine for most yards; treated timbers one or two high pinned with rebar last many years. Block costs more, needs a compacted base, matches a patio or wall you already have and can curve. Both are set tall enough to hold the mulch. Kids walk on both; a timber border is the one they use as a balance beam.

Does a play area need landscape fabric?

Yes, a woven fabric under the mulch keeps the mulch from mixing with the soil and keeps weeds from coming up through it. Rubber mulch on bare soil works into the dirt and is a mess to clean up later; wood fiber without fabric grows weeds. The fabric is lapped and pinned and the anchors go through it.

Can you build the play area around a swing set that is already up?

Yes. The sod is cut around the legs, the border set outside the clearance zone, fabric cut around each leg and anchor, and the mulch spread under the set. It is a little slower than building it first, and the set may need to be re-leveled on the new surface, which we do.
