Playset Assembly and Installation — We Build the Swing Set You Bought
Two hundred bolts, a forty-page manual and a weekend you would rather spend elsewhere. We build the playset square, level and anchored, usually in a day.
Playset assembly and installation is for the swing set sitting in boxes in your garage: JMB Builders unpacks it, sorts the hardware, builds it to the manual, levels it on the spot you picked and anchors it to the ground so it cannot tip. We assemble kits from makers such as Backyard Discovery, Gorilla, Rainbow, Lifetime and the Costco kits across the Twin Cities metro. Priced per project by the size of the set.

A boxed playset is a carpentry kit with a lot of parts. The manual is long because the order matters: a frame bolted out of sequence does not square up, and a set that is not square racks when kids swing on it. Bolted assemblies are what carpenters do, so a playset is a day's work for two of us with the right drivers and a level, instead of a weekend of rereading step 47.
The spot matters as much as the build. The set needs level ground, or we level it: a low corner gets a block or the sod is cut and the high side dug down. It needs clear space around the swings and in front of the slide, away from the fence and the deck. The manual gives the clearances and we lay them out before the first box is opened. Then the set is built in place, every bolt torqued, every cap on, the swings hung and the slide fastened.
Anchoring is the step most people skip and the one that matters. A wooden playset with a swing beam tips when kids swing hard and it is not tied down. The kit anchors or screw-in ground anchors go in at the legs and the swing beam posts, and if the set is on a mulch or rubber play area the anchors go through to the soil below. We build the play area too, if you want one, on the same visit or before.
What you supply
- The playset, all the boxes, with the manual; a photo of the box label or the order tells us the model
- Where you want it, with a photo of the spot from the house
- A level spot, or let us know the grade and we level it as part of the job
- Any extras you bought: anchors, a tarp roof, extra swings, a rock wall
What JMB supplies
- Layout of the set and its clearances on the spot before the boxes are opened
- Site leveled where it needs it: a low corner blocked or the high side cut
- Full assembly to the manual with power drivers, every bolt torqued and capped
- Swings, slide, climbing wall and accessories hung and fastened
- Ground anchors set at the legs and swing beam, kit anchors or screw-in anchors
- Boxes broken down and hauled, and photos in your job folder
How it is priced: per project
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:
- Size of the set: a single swing beam vs. a two-tower set with a bridge
- Wood vs. metal, and whether the lumber is pre-drilled
- Site leveling needed before the set goes down
- Anchoring into soil vs. through a mulch or rubber play area
- Extras: a tarp roof, rock wall, extra swings, a tire swing
- Building a play area with a border and mulch at the same time
Send a photo of the box label or the online order and a photo of the spot. The model tells us the size and the quote covers the full build and anchoring.
How long it takes
A single-tower set with swings: most of a day. A two-tower set with a bridge and a rock wall: one to two days. Add a half day for leveling or a play area.

Situations and options
Wooden swing set kit
The common cedar kit from makers such as Backyard Discovery, Gorilla or a Costco bundle: tower, slide, swing beam, often a rock wall. Built to the manual and anchored at the legs and beam.
Metal or vinyl playset
Lifetime and similar metal-frame sets, and vinyl-clad wood sets such as Rainbow. Fewer parts, same leveling and anchoring, and the same clearances laid out first.
Playset with a play area built under it
The set built on a timber or block bordered area with engineered wood fiber or rubber mulch, done in one visit. The anchors go through the mulch to the soil.
Move or rebuild a used playset
A set bought used or moved from a previous house, taken apart, moved and rebuilt, with any rotted or missing parts replaced and new anchors set.
Playset Assembly and Installation — We Build the Swing Set You Bought: questions, answered
How long does it take to assemble a playset?
Most single-tower swing sets take two of us most of a day, including leveling the spot and anchoring. A big two-tower set with a bridge, a rock wall and a tarp roof runs into a second day. The manuals estimate many more hours for a homeowner because of the sorting, the rereading and the second trip to the hardware store, and that is the time we save you.
Does a playset need to be anchored?
Yes. A wooden set with a swing beam rocks and can tip when kids swing hard, and the makers say to anchor it. Kit anchors or screw-in ground anchors go at the legs and the swing beam posts. On a mulch play area the anchors go through to the soil. It is a half-hour step and we never skip it.
Does the ground need to be level for a swing set?
It needs to be close, and most backyards are not. A small slope is handled by blocking the low legs on treated lumber or pavers; a bigger one means cutting the sod and digging the high side down so the set sits level in the yard. We check the spot with a level before the build and level it as part of the job.
Will you install a playset from Costco or Sam's Club?
Yes, the warehouse kits are the most common ones we build. They come on a pallet in several boxes with a long manual and a big bag of hardware. Send a photo of the label or your order and a photo of the spot, and we come with the drivers and the level and build it to the manual.
How much space do you need around a playset?
Clear space in front of and behind the swings and at the bottom of the slide, with nothing to hit: no fence, deck, tree or patio in that zone. The manual for your set gives the exact clearances and we lay them out on the lawn before anything is built. A yard that is tight can sometimes fit the set turned a different way, and we figure that out at the layout.
What goes under a playset?
Lawn is fine for many sets. A bordered area with engineered wood fiber or rubber mulch is softer and keeps the grass from dying under the swings. If you want one we build it with a timber or block border and a fabric under the mulch, on the same visit or before the set goes up, and the set is anchored through it.
