A shed kit is a good buy right up until the pallet is in the driveway. The wood kits from Menards, Fleet Farm and Home Depot come as precut lumber, sheathing panels, a bundle of shingles and boxes of hardware, and they take two people, a level, a framing nailer and a full day to build well. The vinyl and resin kits from Costco and Lowe's are lighter but fussy: every panel has to be square to the one before it or the roof will not close. Most kits go up crooked because the floor was not square, and everything above copies the floor.
We build kits the way we frame anything. The floor frame is squared by diagonals on the pad and checked level before the deck goes on. Walls are built flat, stood, plumbed and braced. Trusses or the roof panels go on straight, the sheathing is nailed to the schedule the kit calls for, and the roof gets the drip edge, underlayment and shingles the kit supplied, or a better underlayment if you want it. Doors are hung so they swing, close and latch without dragging, which is the part homeowners most often give up on. The shed is anchored to the pad or the ground so a straight-line wind does not move it.
The pad has to be ready before we arrive: level, firm and a bit larger than the shed. If you do not have one, our gravel pad page is the job that comes first, and we can do both in one visit. Sheds that need a permit in your city, and electrical to the shed, are covered below.

- A level, compacted pad ready before we arrive, gravel or concrete, a bit larger than the shed footprint
- Any upgrades you want over the kit: better underlayment, a ridge vent, a lockset, a ramp
- Paint or stain if the kit is wood and you want it finished; painting is quoted as a separate line, or paint it yourself

Send the store and model number of the kit, a photo of the pallet, and a photo of the pad. If the pad is not built yet, say so and we quote the pad on the same visit.
How long it takes
Most wood and resin kits up to a two-car-garage-door width: one day on a ready pad. A large wood kit with a loft or a gambrel roof: one and a half to two days. Add a day if we are building the pad first.

Situations and options
Wood shed kits (Menards, Fleet Farm, Home Depot, Lowe's)
Precut framing, OSB or LP panel sheathing, a shingle bundle and hardware. Built like a small house: floor squared, walls plumbed, trusses set, roof shingled with drip edge and underlayment. Doors hung square so they latch.
Resin and vinyl kits (Costco, Lowe's, Home Depot)
Lifetime, Suncast, Keter and similar panel kits. Every panel has to be square to the last, and the floor panels have to sit flat on a level pad or the roof will not close. We build them square and anchor them, which the manual assumes and most owners skip.
Metal shed kits
Arrow, ShelterLogic and similar steel panel kits. Hundreds of small screws and panels that bend if forced. Built on a squared base frame, anchored, with the doors adjusted so they slide or swing without binding.
Kit plus gravel pad in one visit
If there is no pad yet, we build a compacted class 5 pad with a timber border the day before or the morning of, then assemble the kit on it. One quote, one crew.
Upgrades while it is open
Better roof underlayment, a ridge vent, a real lockset instead of the kit hasp, a ramp for the mower, a loft, and shelving inside on the studs. Easy to add while the framing is exposed.

How long does it take to assemble a shed kit?
Most kits are one day for our crew on a ready pad: floor, walls, roof, shingles, doors and anchors. A large wood kit with a loft or a gambrel roof runs a day and a half to two days. Homeowners doing it themselves usually report two or three weekends, and most of that is squaring the floor and getting the doors to close.
What does the pad need to be before you build the shed?
Level, firm and a little larger than the shed footprint. Compacted gravel inside a timber or block border is the usual pad, and a concrete slab works too. A shed set directly on grass or on a few pavers will settle unevenly and the doors will stop closing. If you do not have a pad yet, we build one on our gravel pad page and can do both in one visit.
Do you anchor the shed down?
Yes, every one. On a concrete pad the floor frame or the base rails are anchored with concrete anchors; on a gravel pad we use ground anchors or auger anchors strapped to the frame. A shed that is not anchored is the one that ends up on its side after a summer storm.
Do I need a permit for a shed in Minnesota?
It depends on the city and the shed's size. Most cities exempt small sheds below a size threshold but still have setback rules from the lot lines and sometimes a limit on the number of accessory buildings. Larger sheds need a permit. Check your city's building page or call the desk before you buy the kit, and we can help read it. Any electrical to the shed is done by a licensed electrician who pulls that permit.
What if parts are missing from the kit?
We inventory the kit against the parts list before we start, so a missing or damaged part is found in the first half hour and not when the roof is half on. The store or the maker replaces the part; we finish everything that does not depend on it and come back for the rest. Common fasteners and shims we carry and just use.
Can you run power to the shed?
A licensed electrician does that, with a permit, and we are glad to coordinate the timing so the conduit goes in before the floor is down. We can frame for a light and an outlet location and leave the path open. The wiring itself is not our work.
