Blinds are the last thing to go in after new windows and the first thing to go wrong: brackets screwed into drywall that pull loose, a shade mounted a quarter inch off level that never hangs straight, a cellular shade cut for an inside mount on a window that is not deep enough. We hang blinds and shades as a labor-only job for homeowners across the Twin Cities metro, usually the whole house at once after a window job or a move. We are an independent installer, not a blind store, and we do not sell the product; you buy it, we mount it.
The job is small per window and it is all about what is behind the bracket. An inside mount wants the bracket screwed into the window jamb or the header above it, level across the opening, at a depth that lets the shade clear the sash. An outside mount wants the bracket in the casing or in the framing behind the drywall, not just the drywall. A drywall-return window has no jamb to screw into, so the bracket needs a toggle anchor or a longer screw that finds the header. Every window gets a level, not a guess.
Cordless and battery-motorized shades are a plain install; we mount them and pair the remote. A hardwired motorized shade needs a licensed electrician for the wiring, and we bring one in or point you to one.

How long it takes
Most blinds and shades: fifteen to thirty minutes a window once the boxes are open. A whole house of fifteen to twenty windows is a day. Motorized shades add pairing time.

Situations and options
Cellular and honeycomb shades
The most common online order. Inside mount needs enough jamb depth for the headrail; the box lists it. Brackets go in the header or jambs, level, and the shade snaps in. Cordless and top-down-bottom-up versions install the same way.
Faux wood and aluminum blinds
Heavier headrails from the big-box stores, often cut to width at the store. The brackets need solid wood or an anchor, the valance clips on last, and hold-down brackets go in at the sill on doors and low windows.
Roller and roman shades
A single tube or headrail that must be dead level or the fabric tracks sideways as it rolls. We shim the bracket on an out-of-level header so the shade runs straight.
Battery motorized shades
Mounted like any shade, then charged or fitted with batteries, paired to the remote or hub, and the upper and lower limits set. Hardwired motors are wired by a licensed electrician we bring in or refer you to.

Who hangs blinds and shades I bought at the store?
JMB Builders hangs blinds and shades homeowners have bought at Home Depot, Lowe's, Menards, IKEA or online, labor only, across the Twin Cities metro. Do you install cellular shades inside the window frame?
Yes, when the window is deep enough. An inside-mount cellular shade needs a minimum jamb depth for the headrail, printed on the box or the order page, and it needs to clear the sash handle and any window lock. Measure from the face of the jamb to the nearest part of the window and compare it to that number. If the window is too shallow, an outside mount on the casing is the fix. Send a photo and the depth and we tell you before you order.
Can blinds be mounted on a drywall return window with no trim?
Yes. There is no wood jamb, only drywall wrapped over the framing, so a screw into the drywall alone will pull out the first time the shade is yanked. We use toggle anchors in the drywall or longer screws up into the header for an inside mount, or mount the brackets on the wall above the opening for an outside mount. Tell us the windows are drywall-wrapped when you send photos so we bring the anchors.
Do you install motorized blinds?
Battery and rechargeable motorized shades, yes: we mount them, charge or fit the batteries, pair the remote or hub, and set the open and closed limits. Hardwired motorized shades need wiring inside the wall, which is a licensed electrician's job; we bring one in or refer you to one, and we do the mounting. Solar-charged shades install like battery ones.
What if the blinds I bought are too wide for the window?
Faux wood, aluminum and some cellular blinds can be cut down a little, and the big-box stores will cut them to width at the counter, usually for free, if you bring them back with the right number. Roller and roman shades generally cannot be trimmed. If it is a small amount, an outside mount on the casing sometimes saves the blind. Send us the box size and your window width and we tell you whether to exchange it or mount it outside the frame.
How many blinds can you install in one visit?
A whole house. Most blinds and shades take fifteen to thirty minutes a window once the boxes are open and matched to the windows, so fifteen to twenty windows is a day for one person. Two-story windows, stairwells, and motorized shades that need pairing take longer. We open every box and match it to its window before any brackets go up, so a wrong size is caught early.
