Percentage Wind Hail Deductible in Minnesota — Large Window Claims

The declarations page says 1% wind/hail. You assumed that meant one percent of the claim.

A percentage wind hail deductible in Minnesota is usually a percent of your dwelling coverage limit, not of the claim, and it applies only to wind and hail losses. On a large window claim it comes off what the insurer pays, and you pay it as part of the job. Minnesota law (Minn. Stat. 325E.66) bars a contractor from paying, waiving or rebating it, and JMB Builders never does. Check your declarations page and ask your agent.

  • Usually a percent of dwelling coverage
  • Applies to wind and hail, not every loss
  • You pay it; no contractor can waive it

Many Minnesota policies carry two deductibles: a flat one for most losses and a separate one for wind and hail. The wind and hail one is often written as a percentage, and the percentage is usually taken from the dwelling coverage limit on your declarations page, the amount the house is insured for, not from the size of the claim. That is why the number surprises people. A small percent of a large dwelling limit is a real amount of money.

On a small repair that deductible can be larger than the whole job, and the right answer is often not to file. On a large claim, thirty windows, a patio door, siding and a roof, the claim clears it easily, and the deductible becomes your share of the project. The insurer subtracts it from what it pays. You pay it to the contractor as part of the balance, by check or direct deposit, on the same written schedule as everything else.

There is no way around paying it, and a contractor who offers one is offering to break the law. Minnesota Statutes section 325E.66 bars a contractor from paying, waiving or rebating any part of your deductible, or promising to. JMB Builders never does. What we do is give you a line-item quote by opening, so you can see what each window costs, phase the work if you choose, and keep upgrades on their own lines. How your deductible is figured is a question for your policy and your agent.

How long it takes

The deductible is part of the balance and is due on the written payment schedule. It does not change when the work happens.

Percentage wind/hail deductible

A percent of the dwelling coverage limit, applied only when wind or hail caused the loss. Read your declarations page for the percent.

Large claim

Many openings plus other trades. The deductible is your share of the project, paid as part of the balance.

Under the deductible

Damage that costs less than the deductible. Usually repaired paid directly with no claim; your call and your agent's.

Percentage Wind Hail Deductible in Minnesota — Large Window Claims: questions, answered

How does a 1 percent hail deductible work?

On most policies it is one percent of the dwelling coverage limit on your declarations page, not one percent of the claim. The insurer subtracts that amount from what it pays on a wind or hail loss. Read your declarations page and ask your agent to confirm how yours is figured.

Is a separate wind and hail deductible common in Minnesota?

Many Minnesota policies have one, written as a flat amount or a percentage, separate from the deductible for other losses. Whether yours does, and how much it is, is on your declarations page. Ask your agent if it is not clear.

Can a contractor cover my percentage hail deductible on a big claim?

No. Minnesota Statutes section 325E.66 bars a contractor from paying, waiving or rebating any part of your deductible, or promising to, whatever the size of the claim. JMB Builders never does. Your deductible is paid as part of the job by check or direct deposit.

How does a percentage deductible work on a window claim?

The insurer prices the window damage, subtracts the deductible and any depreciation, and pays the rest. On a large window claim the deductible is your share of the project. A line-item quote by opening shows what each window costs so you can see what your share is buying.

Is the wind hail deductible applied per window or per claim?

Usually per claim or per occurrence, not per window, but your policy wording controls. If wind and hail damaged the roof, siding and windows in one storm, ask your agent whether it is one deductible on one claim.

What if my damage is less than my wind hail deductible?

Then a claim usually pays nothing and may stay on your record. We quote the repair paid directly, priced the same way, per window or per door. Whether to file is your decision with your agent.
