Hail Damaged Sidelights Insurance Claim — Glass or Whole Entry System

The front door took the hail on its frame, but the sidelight glass cracked and the transom over it has a star break.

Hail damaged sidelights insurance claims are scoped with the whole entry: cracked sidelite or transom glass, dented steel or chipped fiberglass sidelite panels, and the door between them. JMB Builders photographs each piece with a scale reference and writes whether glass inserts can be replaced or the whole system has to go for a match. Twin Cities metro, priced per door system, with the approved scope installed.

  • Priced per door system
  • Glass insert, sidelite panel or whole system
  • Matched to the door between the sidelites

A front door with sidelites is one unit: the door, one or two sidelites and sometimes a transom, sharing a frame, a sill and the same skin, finish and glass style. Hail damages the parts differently. Sidelite and transom glass cracks or breaks, since it faces the storm with nothing over it. Steel sidelite panels dent like the door. Fiberglass panels chip or crack. Decorative glass and the frame around the glass can crack at the corners.

Glass first. Most sidelites hold the glass in a frame insert screwed on from both sides, and a cracked insert can be replaced without touching the door, if the same glass is still made. The glass is tempered, as safety glass in and beside doors has to be. When the panels around the glass are dented, the glass style is discontinued, or the door itself is dented too, the scope is usually the whole system, because a new sidelite next to an old dented door, or a new door between old sidelites, will not match in skin, finish or glass. Matching is often where the claim is decided; we write which parts match and which cannot.

You file the claim and deal with your insurer. We give you photos of each piece, door, each sidelite, the transom, the frame and sill, with a scale reference, and a line-item scope that names the glass style and the door maker where we can find them. We meet your adjuster when you want us there, and install what is approved. Minnesota law bars a contractor from waiving, rebating or paying your deductible, and we do not.

Three photos and a sentence is enough: a reply within one business day, or ask for a free in-home estimate. Or text the photos to 763-204-2099.

Photos (optional)

Up to 3: one wide shot of the area, one close-up of the opening or trim, one of anything you're unsure about.

How do you want your quote?

Free, no obligation. Every quote is written and itemized, so you can compare it line by line.

What you supply

  • Photos of the whole entry from outside and close-ups of each cracked or dented piece
  • The storm date, the claim number and the adjuster's scope
  • The door maker or label if you can find it, often on the hinge edge or the glass
  • A note on whether the door locks and seals as before
  • Your paint or stain color — painting or staining is quoted as a separate line, or finish it yourself

What JMB supplies

  • Photos of the door, each sidelite, the transom, the frame and sill with a scale reference
  • The glass style and maker identified, and whether matching inserts are still made
  • Plastic or board over broken glass until the replacement is in
  • Meeting your adjuster to walk the entry, when you want us there
  • Replacement tempered glass inserts, or a whole new door system with sidelites and transom
  • For a whole system: sill pan, flashing, foam, sealant, lockset and interior casing reset
  • Haul-away of the old glass or door and finished photos in your job folder

How it is priced: per door

Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:

  • Glass inserts only versus the whole door system
  • One or two sidelites, and a transom over the door
  • Decorative glass style and whether it is still made
  • Steel, fiberglass or wood door and sidelite panels
  • Frame, sill or subfloor damage once the old system is out
  • Brick, stone or siding cut back and patched around a new system

Send a photo of the whole entry from outside and inside, close-ups of each damaged piece with a coin for scale, and any label.

How long it takes

Glass inserts and door systems are made to order, so the wait is the order. Once here: glass inserts take a few hours, a whole door system with sidelites a full day.

Situations and options

Glass insert swap

Only the sidelite or transom glass is cracked, the panels and door are sound, and the glass style is still made. New tempered inserts go into the existing frame from both sides.

Whole entry door system

The door and sidelite panels are dented or chipped, the glass is discontinued, or new parts will not match. The old system comes out, the opening is checked and flashed, and a new prehung system goes in.

Transom only

A separate transom over the door system cracked. A transom that is its own unit is replaced alone, matched to the sidelite glass where the style is still made.

Hail Damaged Sidelights Insurance Claim — Glass or Whole Entry System: questions, answered

Does insurance cover hail damaged sidelights on a front door?

Hail is a common covered peril, and cracked sidelite or transom glass is clear damage. What your policy pays, including whether dents count and how matching is handled, is in your policy. Check your policy and ask your agent. We give you photos and a line-item scope for each piece.

Can hail cracked sidelight glass be replaced without a new door?

Often, yes. Most sidelites hold the glass in a frame insert that comes out from both sides, and a new tempered insert goes in without touching the door. That works when the panels are sound and the same glass style is still made.

When does the whole entry door system need to be replaced after hail?

When the door and sidelite panels are dented or cracked, when the glass style is no longer made, or when new parts will not match the old in skin, finish or glass. A door system reads as one piece, so a mismatch is obvious. We write which parts can match and which cannot.

Does sidelight and transom glass have to be tempered?

Glass in and next to doors is a hazardous location under the building code, and sidelite glass is tempered safety glass. Replacement glass is ordered tempered, with the mark etched in a corner. A transom high above a door may follow different rules; we order to what the code requires.

What should I do with a broken sidelight until the new glass comes?

Photograph it first. Then tape heavy plastic over it inside and out, or have plywood screwed over the outside. Keep broken glass swept up and keep the receipts for the cover materials.

Can a contractor pay my deductible on an entry door hail claim?

No. Minnesota law bars a contractor from waiving, rebating or paying your insurance deductible, and JMB Builders does not. The deductible is your share of the repair.
