A sidelite is a narrow glass panel beside the entry door. On most steel and fiberglass entries it is a panel in the same frame as the door, with the glass set in a frame insert held by screws from one side and trim rings on the other, just like a door lite. That means the glass can be replaced without touching the door: the insert comes out, a new insert or glass unit goes in with new sealant, and the trim ring goes back on.
Some older doors and wood units have the glass glazed into the sidelite with stops, and some sidelites are separate units mulled to the door frame. Those are still glass jobs; they just come apart differently. What we check first is the sidelite panel itself. If it is rotted at the bottom or the frame is split, glass alone does not fix it, and the sidelite or the whole entry unit gets replaced.
Glass next to a door is required to be safety glass, so the replacement is tempered or laminated. Decorative glass is matched as close as the maker's inserts allow; if the pattern is no longer made, both sidelites can be changed so they match each other.

Can I replace just the cracked sidelight glass and keep my front door?
Yes, in most cases. The glass in most sidelites sits in a frame insert held by screws and trim rings, so it comes out without touching the door. A new insert or glass unit goes in with fresh sealant.
Does sidelight glass have to be tempered?
Yes. Glass next to a door is a safety-glass location, so the replacement is tempered or laminated. Most sidelite inserts are already made that way.
Can you fix a fogged sidelight?
Yes. A fogged sidelite has a failed seal between the panes, and the fix is the same as a crack: a new glass unit or insert. Cleaning between the panes does not last.
What if I can't find matching decorative glass?
Many decorative patterns are made for years, and the maker's insert is the closest match. If yours is no longer made, replacing both sidelites, or the sidelites and the door lite, keeps them matching.
When does the whole sidelite need to be replaced instead of the glass?
When the sidelite panel is rotted at the bottom, the frame is split, or it leaks at the sill. Glass alone does not fix water getting into the panel. Then the sidelite or the whole entry unit is replaced.
What do I do with a broken sidelight until the glass comes?
Cover it from the outside with clear plastic or plywood screwed to the trim, not the door. We can put a temporary cover on at the first visit when the glass has to be ordered.
