Insurance Won't Replace All Windows for Matching — What to Document
Hail cracked one window. The line was discontinued, the grilles and color are different now, and the adjuster is only paying for the one.
When insurance won't replace all windows for matching, the adjuster and your policy language decide. What JMB Builders does in Minnesota is document the mismatch: photos, the label, whether the maker still sells the sash, glass, color and grille pattern, and what a new unit would look like beside the old ones. You take that to your insurer. No legal advice. Priced per window.
- Documented window by window
- Label, discontinued parts and grille pattern noted
- Your policy and adjuster decide

It happens a lot after hail. One or two windows are cracked, and the rest are fine. The damaged ones are an older Andersen, Pella or builder line that is no longer made, or the maker changed the color, the grille pattern or the glass since your house was built. A new unit will not look like its neighbors. The question is whether the claim pays only for the damaged windows, or for more so they match.
That is decided by your policy's wording and your adjuster, not by us. Policies differ on matching, and we do not give legal or coverage advice. What we can do is give your adjuster facts: a photo of each window on that side, the label or spacer marking that identifies the line, whether the maker still sells a sash or glass for it, and what the closest new unit's frame color, profile and grille pattern are. A side-by-side of the old window and the new product shows the difference plainly.
You file the claim and deal with your insurer. We give you the photos and a line-item scope in the terms adjusters use, meet your adjuster when you want us there, and do the work once it is approved. Minnesota law bars a contractor from waiving, rebating or paying your deductible, and we do not.
What you supply
- Your claim number and the adjuster's scope
- Any window labels, paperwork or the original builder's window list
- Photos you took after the storm
- Access to the windows inside and out
What JMB supplies
- Photos of every window on the damaged elevation, labeled by location
- The window line identified from the label, spacer or hardware
- A written note of whether the maker still sells sashes, glass or the unit
- Frame color, profile, glass and grille pattern of the closest current product
- A line-item scope for the damaged windows, and a separate one for the matching windows
- Meeting your adjuster to walk the windows, when you want us there
- The repair, once your insurer approves a scope
How it is priced: per window
Quoted in writing from your photos within one business day. What moves the number:
- How many windows are damaged vs. how many are on the same elevation
- Whether sashes or glass are still sold for the old line
- Window type, size and glass makeup
- Siding, brick or stucco around full-frame replacements
- Upgrades you choose beyond like-for-like, which you pay on top
Send a photo of each window on the damaged side and any label you can find. The label is what tells us if parts are still made.
How long it takes
The documentation is usually done in one visit. The repair waits on the claim decision and the window order.

Insurance Won't Replace All Windows for Matching — What to Document: questions, answered
Will insurance replace all my windows if the damaged one can't be matched?
It depends on your policy's wording and your adjuster's decision. Policies handle matching differently, and we do not give coverage advice. We document the mismatch clearly so the adjuster can see it: the old line, whether parts are still made, and how a new unit differs.
What if my windows are discontinued?
First check whether the maker still sells sashes or glass for the line; many do for years after a window is discontinued. If they do, the damaged window can often be repaired to match. If not, we note that in writing for your adjuster, with the closest current product.
What do you document for a window matching claim?
A photo of every window on the damaged side, the label or spacer marking for the line, whether parts are still sold, and the frame color, profile, glass and grille pattern of the closest new unit. That goes with a line-item scope for the damaged windows and a separate one for the matching windows.
Can you talk to my insurance company about matching?
You file the claim and deal with your insurer. We give you the photos and scope and walk the windows with your adjuster when you want us there, to explain what is damaged and what does not match. The decision is theirs.
Should I ask the adjuster about matching in writing?
Yes. Ask in writing how your policy handles matching before the order goes in, and keep the answer. It avoids a surprise after a new window is set beside old ones.
Can a contractor pay my deductible on a window claim?
No. Minnesota law bars a contractor from waiving, rebating or paying any part of your insurance deductible, and JMB Builders does not do it. Your deductible is your share of the repair and is paid as part of the job.
