Hail Claim When the House Has Different Window Brands
Some windows are the 1990s originals, the kitchen got new ones a few years ago, and the patio door is a different maker again.

When a hail claim house has different window brands — original builder units, a few replaced later, a newer patio door — each generation is scoped on its own terms. JMB Builders identifies every opening by brand and age, checks whether sashes or glass are still made for each, and writes the line-item scope grouped by generation for your adjuster. You file and deal with the insurer. Twin Cities metro. Priced per window.
- Each opening identified by brand, line and age
- Parts checked per generation, not per house
- Scope grouped so the adjuster can follow it

Few houses keep one set of windows for life. A previous owner replaced the front, a remodel put new units in the kitchen, a basement finish added egress windows, the patio door failed and was swapped. After hail, that history matters. Each generation has its own repair answer: one line may still sell replacement sashes and glass, one may be discontinued, one may be new enough that the exact unit can be ordered again.
Treating the house as one set hides that. The scope reads better window by window: brand and line from the label, spacer marking or hardware, the approximate age, what is damaged, and whether the fix is glass, sash or whole unit for that line. Grouped by generation, the adjuster can see why the older units need full replacement while the newer ones need a sash or a glass unit.
Matching is the hard question. A new window set beside a different maker's older one will not look the same in color, sightlines or grilles. Whether a claim pays for more windows so an elevation matches is decided by your policy wording and your adjuster; check your policy and ask your agent. We document what does and does not match and leave the decision where it belongs. Minnesota law (Minn. Stat. 325E.66) bars a contractor from waiving, rebating or paying any part of your deductible, and we do not.

- Insert or full-frame replacement, and the siding, brick or stucco around it
- Upgrades you choose beyond like kind, which you pay on top
- Second-story access and staging
Send a photo of each window and any label you can find in the corner of the glass or on the frame. We reply within one business day, or book a free in-home estimate.
How long it takes
Identifying and documenting: one visit, an hour or two for most houses. Orders: depends on each brand and is written on the quote. Install: room by room over one or more days.
How your project works
- 1
Sort the windows by generation
Every opening is checked for brand, line and age from the label, spacer print or hardware, and listed by room. The list shows how many generations are on the house and which were hit.
- 2
Check parts for each line
For each generation we note whether replacement glass, sashes or the whole unit are still sold. That decides whether a damaged window is repaired or replaced, line by line.
- 3
Write the scope by group
Damaged windows are written as their own lines, grouped by generation, with photos. Windows not hit but on the same elevation go on a separate matching list for the adjuster to decide on.
- 4
Measure once, order once, install
Once approved, every opening on the order is measured in person and the new units go in as one order so they match each other. Install runs room by room; the final invoice follows the approved lines.
Hail Claim When the House Has Different Window Brands: questions, answered
Does it matter on a hail claim that my windows are different brands?
Yes, because each brand and line has its own repair answer. One may still sell sashes and glass, another may be discontinued and need a full unit. A scope that lists each window by brand and age shows the adjuster why the repairs differ across the same house.
How do you tell what brand a window is?
Most windows carry a maker's mark etched in a corner of the glass, a label on the frame or jamb, or printing on the spacer between the panes. Hardware and the shape of the frame help too. Receipts or a builder's window list settle it when the marks are gone.
Will insurance replace my newer windows to match the old ones, or the other way around?
That is decided by your policy wording and your adjuster, not by the contractor. Check your policy and ask your agent how matching is handled. We document what matches and what does not, elevation by elevation, so the decision is made on facts.
Can I switch the whole house to one window brand on the claim?
You can ask. The claim pays for like kind and quality for the damaged windows; moving every window to one line is usually an upgrade you pay the difference on, and undamaged windows are your cost unless the adjuster approves them. Ask your adjuster in writing before the order goes in.
Some of my windows were replaced before the storm. Are they still covered?
What is covered is set by your policy, so check your policy and ask your agent. From our side, every window the storm damaged gets photographed and listed the same way, whatever its age or maker. A newer window often has the easiest repair, because its exact line is still sold.
Can a contractor cover my deductible on a hail claim with mixed windows?
No. Minnesota law bars a contractor from waiving, rebating or paying any part of your insurance deductible, and JMB Builders does not. That holds however many brands of window the claim covers.
