Paver Pool Surround — Paver Deck Around Any Pool, Built on a Base

A pool with a ring of mud and sod around it, turned into a flat paver deck you can walk around barefoot and set chairs on.

A paver pool surround is a paver deck built around an above-ground or in-ground pool: compacted class 5 base, bedding sand, pavers set with a fall away from the pool, edge restraint and polymeric sand. JMB Builders builds them across the Twin Cities metro once the pool is in and backfilled; the coping at the pool edge is set by the pool installer and we build out from it. Priced per project after a site measure.

Rear yard of a Minnesota rambler where a paver pool deck is going in

The pool company sets the pool and the coping, and leaves. What is left around it is backfill and bare dirt, and the paver deck is a separate job. We build it: the walkway around an above-ground pool, the full deck around an in-ground pool, and the path from the pool back to the patio door. Pavers suit a pool deck in Minnesota because they do not crack when the ground moves, the surface stays cooler than concrete, and a wet paver has more grip than a troweled slab.

The base matters more here than on a normal patio. The soil around a new in-ground pool is backfill, and backfill settles for a season. We build a pool surround after that settling has happened, or we dig the loose fill out to firm ground and replace it with class 5 compacted in lifts. The pavers are set with a fall away from the pool so splash water runs to the lawn or a drain and not back into the pool, and so meltwater does not sit against the coping and freeze.

The coping, the row of stone or concrete that overhangs the pool wall, belongs to the pool installer; it is bonded to the pool structure and they warranty it. We start our pavers at the back edge of the coping, cut to it cleanly, and set a sand joint there rather than a hard one so the deck can move a little without cracking the coping.

What you supply

  • The pool in place, with the coping set and the backfill done by the pool installer
  • The paver style and color, picked at a supply yard or from our samples; we order and deliver them
  • How far out the deck goes and where the paths run to the house, the gate and the shed
  • A decision on a step or a landing at an above-ground pool ladder or deck

What JMB supplies

  • A site measure, layout, and the utility locate including the pool's electrical and plumbing runs
  • Loose backfill dug out to firm ground and class 5 compacted in lifts
  • Geotextile fabric where the soil calls for it, screeded bedding sand, pavers set with a fall away from the pool
  • Clean cuts to the back edge of the coping, with a sand joint so the deck and coping can move apart
  • Rigid edge restraint spiked into the base on every open edge, polymeric sand swept and set
  • A paver landing at the pool ladder or steps, and paths to the house and gate on the same base
  • Sod repair at the edges and photos of the finished deck in your job folder

How it is priced: per project

Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:

  • Square footage and shape: a round above-ground pool means a lot of curved cuts
  • How much backfill has to come out and be replaced with compacted class 5
  • Paver choice: standard concrete pavers vs. large slabs or a lighter color that stays cooler
  • Access: a skid loader around the house, or everything wheeled through a gate
  • Drainage: a channel drain or a swale where the deck meets a slope
  • Paths back to the house, the gate or a pool equipment pad built on the same visit
  • Lighting conduit under the deck, wired later by a licensed electrician

Send a photo from the house showing the pool and the yard around it, and tell us whether the pool installer has finished the coping and backfill. The quote is written after a site measure.

How long it takes

A walkway around an above-ground pool: two to three days. A full deck around an in-ground pool: four to seven working days, weather allowing, after the backfill has settled.

Situations and options

Walk around an above-ground pool

A paver ring a few feet wide around the pool wall so nobody walks through mud to the ladder, with a wider landing at the ladder or the pool deck stairs. Curved cuts along the pool wall.

Full deck around an in-ground pool

Pavers from the back of the coping out to the lawn on all sides, sloped away from the water, with room for chairs on the sunny side. Built after the backfill has settled or on replaced base.

Pool to patio connection

A paver path or a widened deck that joins the pool surround to the existing patio at the house so the whole back yard reads as one surface, with the pattern tied in at the seam.

Equipment pad and fence line

A small paver pad for the pump and heater, and a paver strip under the pool fence so the mower does not have to trim against it.

Paver Pool Surround — Paver Deck Around Any Pool, Built on a Base: questions, answered

When should the paver deck go in after a new pool?

After the pool installer has finished the coping and the backfill, and ideally after that backfill has had a season to settle. Loose fill around a pool shell drops as it gets rained on, and a paver deck built on it drops with it. If you do not want to wait, we dig the loose fill out to firm ground and replace it with class 5 compacted in lifts, which costs more in excavation but gives you a deck that stays flat.

Who installs the coping around the pool?

The pool installer. The coping is bonded to the pool wall and is part of what they warranty, so we leave it to them. We start our pavers at the back edge of the coping, cut to it, and set a sand joint there instead of mortar so the deck can move with the frost without cracking the coping off the pool.

Can you put pavers around an above-ground pool?

Yes. A paver walk around the pool wall keeps the grass and mud out of the pool and gives you a dry place for the ladder or the steps. The base is built the same as a patio, with the pavers set a little below the bottom rail of the pool so they do not push on the wall, and the cuts follow the curve.

Which way should a paver pool deck slope?

Away from the pool. Splash water and rain should run off the deck to the lawn or a drain, not back toward the coping, where it carries dirt into the pool in summer and freezes against the coping in winter. We set the fall in the base and screed the sand to it, and add a channel drain where the deck runs into a slope or the house.

Are pavers slippery around a pool?

Less than a troweled concrete slab. A standard concrete paver has a textured face, and the joints give wet feet something to grip. Lighter colors stay cooler in the sun, which matters barefoot. We avoid polished or sealed-glossy finishes on a pool deck and can show you pavers at the yard with a face made for wet areas.

Can you run lighting under the pool deck?

We can lay conduit under the pavers before the deck goes down so wiring for path lights or a post light can be pulled later without lifting anything. The lights and the wiring are installed by a licensed electrician; pool electrical has its own rules on distance from the water, and that is their call.
