Paver Pavilion With Outdoor Fireplace — Footings, Pad and Kit

A roofed pavilion over a paver patio with a wood or gas fireplace at one end — footings below frost, a compacted base, and the fireplace on a footing of its own.

A paver pavilion with fireplace is a paver patio pad under a roofed pavilion, kit or custom-framed, with an outdoor fireplace built at one end. JMB Builders builds all of it across the Twin Cities metro and north to St. Cloud: post footings below the frost line, a compacted class 5 base under the pavers, and the fireplace kit on its own footing. Priced per project, quoted from your photos, with a reply within one business day.

  • Priced per project: footings, pad, pavilion, fireplace
  • Post footings below the frost line, pavers cut around them
  • Fireplace kit on its own poured footing

Minnesota home and yard where a paver pad and pavilion with a fireplace are planned

A pavilion with a fireplace is three jobs stacked on one spot: footings for the posts, a paver pad between them, and a fireplace that weighs as much as a small car at one end. Each one moves differently in Minnesota frost if it is not built right. Posts on shallow footings lift in winter and the roof racks. A pad on thin base settles under the chairs. A fireplace set on the pavers alone tips and cracks its own veneer. We build all three so they stay where they were set.

The order of work matters. Footings go in first, dug below the frost line and poured with a bracket on top so the posts sit above the pavers, not buried in them. The fireplace footing is poured at the same time, sized for the kit you picked. Then the pad: excavate, compact class 5 in lifts, bedding sand, pavers, edge restraint and polymeric sand, cut tight around each post bracket. The pavilion goes up on the brackets, and the fireplace kit is stacked and veneered last so the roof is over the work.

Kit pavilions from the home centers and the online structure sellers come with their own anchoring instructions; we follow them and add footings where the kit assumes a slab. A custom-framed pavilion is built like a porch roof: treated or cedar posts, beams, rafters and a shingled or metal roof. Either way you get a roof that is square and a floor that is flat under it.

What you supply

  • The pavilion: a kit (Yardistry, Backyard Discovery, Sojag or similar) or a size for us to frame
  • The fireplace kit (kits such as Belgard Bordeaux or Brighton, Stone Age, FireRock) or a photo of the look you want
  • Paver style and color, picked at a supply yard or from samples; we order and deliver
  • Wood-burning or gas: a gas line is run by a licensed plumber and sized to the fireplace burner

What JMB supplies

  • Site layout, utility locate and a check of your city's rules for roofed structures and open flame
  • Post footings dug below the frost line and poured, with brackets set to the pavilion's layout
  • A separate footing under the fireplace, sized to the kit's weight and footprint
  • Excavation, compacted class 5 base in lifts, bedding sand, pavers, edge restraint and polymeric sand
  • The pavilion assembled or framed on the brackets, plumb and square, roof on
  • The fireplace kit stacked, capped and veneered to its drawing
  • Spoils hauled off and the lawn around the pad raked out
  • Photos of the finished pavilion in your job folder

How it is priced: per project

Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:

  • Pavilion size and whether it is a kit or framed on site
  • Number of posts; each one is a footing below the frost line
  • Fireplace kit size and veneer: a plain block kit vs. full stone veneer
  • Wood-burning vs. gas, with the gas line by a licensed plumber as its own line
  • Pad size and paver choice, and whether it ties into an existing patio
  • Access for a skid loader and a place to stage pallets
  • Whether your city needs a permit for the roof, the fireplace or both

Send a photo of the spot from the house and one from the yard, with the pavilion size and the fireplace kit you like. We can set up a free in-home estimate from that.

How long it takes

Footings and pad: about a week. Pavilion assembly: one to three days. Fireplace kit: two to four days. Gas line and inspections run between those.

Situations and options

Kit pavilion on footings

A cedar or aluminum kit set on poured footings with brackets instead of the slab anchors in the box. The pad is cut around the brackets so the pavers run under the roof edge to edge.

Custom-framed pavilion

Treated or cedar posts and beams, rafters, and a shingled or metal roof to match the house. Sized to the pad and the fireplace, with the ridge running the way you want the view.

Fireplace at the gable end

The kit is built on its own footing at one end of the pad, with the chimney run past the roof edge. A hearth course of pavers in front takes the sparks.

Pad only, structure later

Footings and the paver pad now, with the brackets set so a kit or framed pavilion can go on when you are ready. Nothing to cut out later.

Paver Pavilion With Outdoor Fireplace — Footings, Pad and Kit: questions, answered

Can a pavilion sit on a paver patio?

Not on the pavers alone. The posts need footings below the frost line so they do not lift in winter, and the pavers are cut around the post brackets. The pad carries the chairs and the table; the footings carry the roof. Set posts on pavers and the first winter racks the frame.

Does an outdoor fireplace need its own footing under a pavilion?

Yes. A block fireplace kit is a lot of weight on a small footprint. On pavers and base alone it settles unevenly and the veneer cracks. We pour a footing for the fireplace at the same time as the post footings, sized to the kit, and build the pad up to it.

Do I need a permit for a pavilion with a fireplace in Minnesota?

Usually yes for the roof, and most cities have rules on open flame and how far a fireplace sits from the house, the lot line and the roof above it. The rules differ by city. We check yours before we order anything and pull the permit when one is needed.

Wood-burning or gas fireplace in a pavilion?

Wood gives the real fire and needs the chimney run well past the roof edge and a hearth in front. Gas lights with a switch and makes no smoke under the roof, but the line is run by a licensed plumber and the burner has to match the kit. Both work; it comes down to how you want to use it and whether gas is already near the spot.

Can you install a pavilion kit I bought?

Yes. Kits from Costco, Home Depot, Menards and the online sellers all go together the same way: a layout, anchors, posts, beams and roof panels. We pour real footings instead of the slab anchors most kits expect, then build the pad around them and assemble the kit on top. Send the model number with your photos.

How do you keep the pavers flat under a pavilion through a Minnesota winter?

The same way as any patio: dig to the base depth, compact class 5 in lifts, screed bedding sand, and restrain the edge. The roof keeps rain off the middle of the pad, but the edges get the drip line, so we grade the base to drain away from the posts and the fireplace footing.
