Paver Driveway Rut Repair — Sunken Tire Tracks Fixed at the Base

Two troughs down the paver driveway where the tires run, and a dip at the garage door where the car sits: the base let go, and the base is what gets fixed.

Paver driveway rut repair fixes the two sunken tracks where the tires run: the pavers in the rut are lifted and stacked, the base under them is dug out and rebuilt with class 5 compacted in lifts, and the same pavers go back flat with new bedding sand and polymeric sand. JMB Builders does this across the Twin Cities metro. Adding sand under the pavers is not a fix; the base is. Priced per project.

Front of a Minnesota rambler with a paver driveway being repaired

A paver driveway that has ruts in the tire tracks was built on too thin a base, or the base was not compacted in lifts, or the soil under it was never dug out. Every time a car rolls over the same two lines the loose base packs down a little more, water collects in the low spot, freezes, and lifts the pavers next to it. After a few winters you have two troughs, a pavers-and-puddle dip in front of the garage, and joints that have opened up so the sand washes out. The pavers themselves are fine; it is what is under them.

The repair is honest work: we lift the pavers along the rut and a course or two past it, stack them in order so the pattern goes back, dig out the bedding sand and the soft base until we hit firm ground, and rebuild. Class 5 goes in and is compacted in thin lifts to the depth a driveway needs, geotextile fabric goes down first where the soil is clay, and new bedding sand is screeded to the height of the pavers around it. The pavers go back, get compacted in, and the joints get polymeric sand. If an edge has spread as the rut dropped, the restraint is reset while the pavers are up.

What we do not do is the quick version, lifting the pavers and shoveling more sand under them. That is what the last person did, and it lasts one winter. A rut is a base failure, and the driveway stays flat only if the base under the tracks is built to carry a car in Minnesota frost.

What you supply

  • Photos down the driveway from the street and from the garage, and one across the worst rut with a straightedge or a board laid over it
  • The cars parked somewhere else for the days of the repair
  • A few spare pavers if you have them from the original job, for any that are cracked
  • Where the driveway drains now, if you know, and where water sits after rain

What JMB supplies

  • Pavers in the rut lifted and stacked in order so the pattern goes back as it was
  • The failed base and bedding sand dug out to firm ground and hauled off
  • Geotextile fabric where the soil calls for it, and class 5 compacted in thin lifts to a driveway depth
  • New bedding sand screeded level to the surrounding pavers, pavers reset and compacted in
  • Matched replacement pavers for any that are cracked, worked into the field
  • Edge restraint reset where the edge spread as the rut dropped
  • Polymeric sand swept in across the repair and set with water
  • Photos of the finished driveway in your job folder

How it is priced: per project

Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:

  • Length of the ruts and whether both tracks or one, and how far the dip reaches at the garage door
  • How deep the soft base goes before firm ground; some drives were built on topsoil
  • Whether the whole driveway needs the base rebuilt or only the tracks and the apron
  • Clay under the drive that needs fabric and more depth vs. sand
  • Cracked pavers to match and replace, and whether the paver is still made
  • Edge restraint reset along one or both sides
  • A sinking apron at the garage slab that needs the first course re-cut

Lay a straight board across the rut and photograph the gap under it. That and a photo down the drive tell us how much base to plan for.

How long it takes

Two tire tracks on a typical two-car driveway: two to three days, with the drive back in use the day after the polymeric sand sets. A full-base rebuild on the whole drive takes longer and is quoted as a new driveway.

Situations and options

Both tire tracks rebuilt

The pavers along both tracks and a course or two past them lifted, the base under the tracks dug out and rebuilt, and the field reset flat. The usual repair on a drive whose edges and middle are still sound.

Dip at the garage door

The low spot in front of the garage where the car sits and water collects. The apron is lifted, the base rebuilt, and the first course re-cut to meet the garage slab flush so the car does not bump in.

Rut plus spread edge

Where a track dropped near the edge and pushed the border out, the edge restraint is reset on the rebuilt base and the border course is pulled back tight before the field is reset.

Whole driveway base rebuild

When the ruts are everywhere and the base was never there, every paver comes up, the full base is built to a driveway depth, and the same pavers go back. Quoted as a new paver driveway with your pavers.

Paver Driveway Rut Repair — Sunken Tire Tracks Fixed at the Base: questions, answered

Why does my paver driveway have ruts where the tires go?

The base under the tracks was too thin or was not compacted in lifts, and the weight of the car rolling over the same two lines packed it down over several winters. Water then collects in the low spots and freezes, which lifts the pavers next to the rut and opens the joints. The pavers are rarely the problem. It is the depth and compaction of the class 5 under them, which for a driveway in Minnesota has to be built for a vehicle, not for a patio.

Can you fix the ruts without redoing the whole driveway?

Usually. If the edges and the middle of the drive are still flat, we lift the pavers along the tracks and a course or two past them, rebuild the base under those lines, and reset the same pavers. The pattern goes back as it was and the repair is hard to see. If the drive is rutted and wavy everywhere, the base was never built, and lifting it all once and rebuilding is the only repair that lasts.

Can't you just add sand under the sunken pavers?

That is what the last repair probably did, and it lasted a winter. Sand under a paver is a bedding layer, not a base; it moves as soon as the soft class 5 under it packs down again. We dig out the bedding and the failed base to firm ground, rebuild the class 5 in compacted lifts, and only then screed new sand. It costs more than a bag of sand and it is the repair that stays flat.

Will the reset pavers match the rest of the driveway?

They are the same pavers, stacked in order and put back in the same pattern, so yes. Any that cracked are replaced from your spares or matched from the supplier if the paver is still made. The reset section may look a shade cleaner at first because the surface was disturbed; a season of weather and it blends. A pressure wash and re-sand of the whole drive at the same time evens it out faster.

How long before I can drive on the repaired section?

The day after the polymeric sand is set. The pavers are compacted in and the joints filled on the last day, the sand is wet to activate it, and it needs to cure before a tire turns on it. Park on the street that night and the drive is back in use the next day.

Why is the driveway sinking right at the garage door?

Two things meet there: the base next to the garage slab is the hardest spot to compact, and the car sits there, so its weight is on the same pavers every day. Water off the garage roof often lands there too. The apron is lifted, the base rebuilt tight to the slab, and the first course re-cut to meet the slab flush so the car rolls in without a bump and water does not pool at the door.
