Dated 1990s ceramic in the kitchen or entry, well stuck and flat — covered with vinyl plank instead of a day of chipping tile and thinset.
You can install vinyl plank over ceramic tile when the tile is solid, flat and not too thick for the doors and toilet. JMB Builders checks for loose or hollow tiles, fills the grout lines, handles door clearance, the toilet flange and transitions, and floats the LVP over it. When the tile should come out, we say so. Tile removal is loud, dusty and slow, so skipping it is tempting. A floating vinyl plank floor can go over ceramic or porcelain tile when three things are true: the tile is solidly bonded, the floor is flat, and there is height to spare. Most plank makers allow it and say so in the install sheet, with limits on grout-line width and depth.
We check each of those. Tiles that sound hollow or rock get reset or cut out and patched level. Wide or deep grout lines are filled with a floor patch or an embossing leveler so they do not telegraph through the thin plank. Then the height: the plank adds its thickness on top of the tile, so doors may need to be undercut, the toilet goes back on a flange extender, a dishwasher may be trapped under the counter, and transitions to the next room need a reducer.
Sometimes the answer is to take the tile out. Too many loose tiles, a floor already high against carpet or hardwood, a toilet that cannot be raised cleanly, or a heated tile floor you want to keep working. Then we quote the tile removal with the new floor.

Tile out first

Can you install vinyl plank over ceramic tile?
Yes, when the tile is solidly bonded, the floor is flat and the added height works at the doors, toilet and next rooms. Most LVP makers allow it, with limits on grout lines. Loose tiles get reset and grout lines get filled first. If any of those do not work, the tile comes out.
Do grout lines need to be filled before LVP?
Usually. Thin vinyl plank can show wide or deep grout lines as lines in the finished floor, and some makers require them filled. We skim them with a floor patch so the surface is flat. Narrow, shallow grout lines on a rigid-core plank sometimes pass as they are; the install sheet decides.
What happens to the toilet when LVP goes over tile?
The toilet comes off, the plank goes under where it sat, and it goes back on a flange extender so it seals at the new floor height, with a new wax ring. If the flange is broken or the drain needs work, that is done by a licensed plumber.
Will doors need to be cut for LVP over tile?
Often. The plank adds its thickness on top of the tile, and a door that cleared the tile may drag. We undercut the doors and trim the jamb bottoms so the plank slides under. Exterior doors are checked too.
When should tile be removed instead of covered?
When several tiles are loose or hollow, when the floor would end up too high against the next room, when a dishwasher would be trapped, or when you want to fix a cracked subfloor underneath. Then we quote removing the tile and thinset with the new floor.
Can LVP go over heated tile floors?
Covering a heated tile floor with plank insulates it, and many plank makers set a surface temperature limit. Most people with working floor heat keep the tile. If the heat is dead or you are fine losing it, the plank can go over.
